Fella, we can't worry about other teams, and what they are doing. We just have to get in the players we want. We should concentrate on ourselves. We are desperate for a left-footed centre-half, and especially someone who provides physical presence at set pieces in both boxes. Ned and Toure are probably our best centre-halves but if we went into games with those two we would struggle against centre-forwards who are powerful in the air. I don't think Lescott is an incredible talent, but he has the skills and abilities that we desperately need. Then in a couple of years, hopefully we will see Lescott and Ned playing together. Capello is a fine judge of defenders, so if he rates Lescott, he must be a good player.

TBH I am more worried about Spurs than Everton.

Definitely agree with you here DHTP, even before Moyes starting losing it i had Spurs down for 6th spot. Really don't see either Toff's or Villa in the top six this season.

I think we should lose this "bench warmer" mentality mate. If we have a squad, surely every player should be considered good enough to stake a claim for the 1st team. Buying a player as a bench warmer seems to imply a player "not quite as good".

So you'd rather pay 15 or 20 million pounds for someone who at the end of the day still is ''not quite as good'' as either Toure or Ned?
Either buy a world-class defender (very unlikely) or buy a good, solid defender who can compete with Ned, Toure & Dunne. If we opt for the second, there is no way that player can be worth 20 million. Lescott is good but never worth 20 million. Signing him for such a ridiculous price would probably mean Hughes will be less likely to drop him, even if his form isn't up to scratch. Don't want an overrated Trekkie getting in the way of Nedum's development

That's a lot of sense. I think whoever we bring in should be centered around Ned being the core of the defence for the next 10 years.

I am not making a value judgement on Lescott, or any player.
I am making the point that we should only buy the best that is reasonably available.
There is every chance that whoever we buy is going to take part in the season at some point and we want only the best quality we can get to wear the shirt.
I understand your thoughts about Ned and like you want him to succeed but if we want to compete with the best...we have to have the best.

I agree. But I think Ned is better than Lescott. If Hughes pays 20million for Lescott, he's hardly going to put him on the bench is he? That's what worries me. He'll be playing Lescott ahead of Ned, not because he is a better player but cos he cost so much. As I said, if we buy a true world-class centre-back I won't complain about Nedum sitting on the bench, but Lescott and Upson are by no means world-class.

Although I personally find Ned better than Lescott. Why would Hughes select Dunne over Ned against Blackburn?

If we purchase Lescott, would this be the CB selection order?
3rd) Ned; 2nd) Dunne; 1st) Lescott

Ned should be playing every game, hands down. How can Hughes ignore his amazing performances last year? Lets not forget his impressive performance against Barcelona at RB!

Maybe we should try...

1. Jason Roberts.

2. Ned 2nd, Dunne 3rd.

3. And we have three rightbacks now, if we sign Lescott we should revisit this issue.

4. Exactly and I think that's Clueless' thinking.

Did anyone see SSN earlier?? Said we had dropped out of tryin to sign Lescott(came flasin up in yellow at bottom of screen) and an interview was comin up with Hughes on the matter.. I see the interview and I must have missed something as he didnt even hint that he was droppin out of the Lescott deal.Just said something along the lines of goin in for players and havin to move on due to complications. Those fookers at SSN dont half make a mound out of a mole hill...Now sayin tht Hughes has not given up on signing Lescott. Fookin clueless

Thanks for chiming in. You've been preaching this for a while now, maybe we didn't understand the amount of patience which is needed.

Let's say it was all sorted, Lescott is ours, but it won't happen until the end of the window. With Jags injury Everton need Lescott for as long as they can get him. They can use the time to find replacements as well. This would also help explain why Lescott's mind wasn't right before last weeks match. He knows he's helping his current teammates out, but those teammates will be one of his biggest rivals in a couple of weeks. I can understand why he'd be having a difficult time sorting that out. If it wasn't a done deal, I'd expect Lescott to be a professional and go out and do the best job he can. Unfortunately, I can't find any explanation in this scenario for the way Moyes has handled things. No matter how this unfolds I think he's botched it.

interesting, but, the mail has a mixed record of accuracy over our delas. this is not the first time they have said something along the lines of, 'city finally land lescott'.

if he is unveiled today, great. frankly, i'll only belive it when i see him at the stadium doing the usual transfer stuff.

all said, i hope he is coming.
