What a lot of people are forgetting is that 4th place doesn't guarantee a group place. Due to our UEFA correlation ranking, I'm guessing we'd be an unseeded team in the draw for non-champions. This year, that would have meant we'd have faced one of:

Sporting Club
Panathanaikos/Atletico Madrid
Lyon
Arsenal
Stuttgart

over 2 legs. Lose that (even on away goals), and we're down to Europa. In this case, I'd far rather win a cup, which would leave us in this situation anyway.

It's ridiculous it's like that.

It's just a ploy so all the traditionally bigger clubs are always towards the end.

It all comes down to money, the sponsors wouldn't be happy if two lesser teams made it to the final, a bit like Monaco and Porto did.

What they are trying to do is avoid getting 4 English teams in the last 8, and 3 in the semi finals again.

Of course I am. Premier League is no be all end all. Who's going to remember some decent finishes among generations to come? No one, that's who. However silverware stays with us forever. We had two 5th spot finishes little over 15 years ago yet no one speaks about those anymore. 76 league cup does keep geeting mention though.
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

I'll take a trophy this season please. I'm 27 years old and like lots of others never seen us win a domestic trophy and I think that represents the next step up from where we are right now. Carling cup first then FA cup in may and if we happen to finish 4th happy days

Nurse, nurse whats the time? I appear to have missed my meds?

Agree with Antii - apart from the relegation bollox - but there will be no mention in years to come on the Roll of Honour for finishing 4th in the league.....BUT win the League Cup so we can stick it right up the scums noses when we play them in April....Yes fucklin please, yes fucklin please.

Finishing 4th would concern then more than us winning the Carling Cup or FA Cup. Tottenham, Middlesborough and Portsmouth have won it in recent times.

What's your point ENIAM NAM, cos I'm from down Sarf I haven't had to put up with shit from the red inbreds?

As most folks know they breed like rabbits down here, so pretty much since the late 60's I've had the dubious distinction of being the odd one out through schooldays and beyond.

So deluded??? Yep, deluded and why don't you come down here and enjoy the delusion when we win our first Cup in 33 years.

Dronny, I had no idea whether you were from Salford, Stockport, or down Sarf, but I just can't believe that you think that winning the league cup would give us bragging rights over utd fans.

Yes, a banner might have to come down, but if I started bragging about winning the league cup once to my rag mates they would piss themselves.

IMO, finishing in the top 4, with the players this would give us access to with our owners investment would be the best thing that could happen to us. The sooner this could happen the better, given all the restrictions platini is talking about. Once we are established in the Champions League, believe me, the trophies will follow.

Fair point mate, but tbf, I and no doubt thousands of us, have had to put up with them bragging after last Saturday. So, how about we beat them in the LC or FA Cup next year!!

I wouldn't get to het up about Michel, where there's a means there's way and I'm sure we would not roll over when we get to the head table.

For we are ravenous and we will feast as you say!!

In what way would finishing 4th give us bragging rights over rags that winning the league cup wouldn't. Those arrogant knobs wouldn't give us any respect for either.

However seeing City win something would stay on with me forever. That would be for us, the long suffering fans.

Champion's League, well what can I say, most people know I don't rate the competition much as I prefered old European Cup. Finishing fourth would be fantastic achievement and would show we are on the right course. However let's be honest here, we need to learn to walk before we can run and we aren't ready to challenge for Champion's League next season.

Personally I feel that we need to advance gradually. To win something would be first step, then try and have a crack at league title and only after that are we ready to take on European giants seriously. But again, that first cup is the key step for me.

And maybe I should've clarified that the relegation comment was said in jest as there's obviously no chance we'd be relegated. I suppose I said to show how much winnin something would mean to me.
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

If we finish top 4, that means we are good enough to win a cup.

Therefore on balance I think I would like to finish top 4, and the pots should follow soon after

I think there is a fair to middling chance of both this year after the league cup draw today

On this, I totally agree. Remember, Leeds and Newcastle both made it to the Champions' League.
