I don't imagine anyone who has played competitive sport would value a pre match handshake. It makes no sense. I can only think it's a cosmetic event introduced for marketing/pc reasons. The NZ haka is more appropriate pre battle.

Personally, I never shake hands with the people around me when attending the game, except at New Year.
