This signing give us depth, and competition that has not been there in central defence. Demi was intended to be a backup to Mangala last season, yet we relied upon him heavily. Otamendi is in his prime and a top class defender who could push Mangala, or Kompany out of the team to prove themselves if needs be. Kompany has also not had the best injury record so this gives us better cover.

Surely this signing came into light in part due to the issue with money owed from the Negredo deal so sure, we could use a world class central midfielder but I would gather that is next summer's main target. He was available and defence was a known weakness for us last season. Where else could we have spent anyway? Also seems we are still going after De Bruyne to replace Navas on the right, and putting he and Nasri on the bench, which also gives us tremendous depth we want to compete across all competitions.

This also prevents him from going to our rivals who are almost all in need of better central defenders.

This exactly ... one, it stops someone else picking him up (Scum or Chelsea or Arsenal, he'd certainly improve them all, had they gotten him) ... and second, now if we have Komps or Mangala injured or suspended or out of form, we have someone who will step in and we won't worry about a makeshift defence ... this is probably also keeping in mind Champions League and wanting a full throttle at that front this season, with mid week games and weekend games especially in Nov and Dec, we'll see how this works compared to how other top clubs do during that period.

I'm so proud to be a city fan saw Chelsea smashed Saturday in our brilliant new stadium. Our class and style at the moment is staggering and now we get a great player to add to our excellent squad. We've come a million miles from frank Clarke and division two as it was. City the best team in the world ctid

I'm hoping that beard will be gone soon. I'm sure he's had a laugh with his mates about it, but you can't play a Prem league match with a comedy beard. Other than that, I'm very pleased this deal is done.

Gotta agree, hairs a bit naff. That shaven line bit really irritates me.

The beard doesnt quite have the same natural wonder that Javi Garcia's did either, but its acceptable. Too 'neat' i'd argue. Very defined.

thank you, a sensible post.

i agree with your first paragraph. but i would question: "Top class defender"? yes he did make the La Liga team last season and i think also for the Copa America (could be wrong on that last one) but, if what im reading about this guy is correct, there were big doubts about him in his last season at Porto which is why they sold him for pennies for Valencia. Porto is fantastic at selling their talented assets for big money. yes he had a breakout season last year but i don't know if i would call him a top class defender as of now (although, i guess the 1 season thing could also be said about KDB…which is why the money Wolfsburg are demanding and are gonna get is absurd).

as for the 2nd paragraph, i guess defense was where we could strengthen (aside from CM). if this had happened in late July I would've probably agreed. but our defense looks good now. yes it could change but spending this kind of cash for "IF" scenarios seems like a rash move. plus, we don't have to spend. we could've pocketed the Negredo money and put it to use next season.

yes it prevents him from going to our rivals but is that what City does now, buys players to stop them from going to our rivals? are we Roman stealing Willian from Spurs now? should've we have bought Darmian so United couldn't get him and would be forced to play Valencia at RB? we'd have RB depth and 3 talented players. should we have pushed through a move for Pedro so Chelsea or United couldn't get him? it'd give us depth or a replacement for Navas and for that kind of money Pedro could be a steal.

I'd also argue that if he wanted to go to United he would've. they were after him all summer and we only came in at the last minute. if he wanted to go he would've.

at some point in time City is going to have to commit to bringing through youth. i mean, hell, they spent so much money on the Academy they'd better start doing that. and now our most promising youngster--Denayer--is promoted to the first time and, according to his agent, promised to be one of the four center backs and then we swoop in on Otamendi. you don't want to scare off future young talent. yes we're all probably placing too much faith in Denayer at this point and he's prob a little raw but if our best prospect to date can't get a chance (yet) why should anyone else. yes, Martin will probably leave after this season and then we will have 4 really good center backs but how do you keep all of them happy? that was the case with our 4 forwards. either way, this move doesn't look good for City moving in a self-sustainable direction. again, just my 2¢. but what do i know, im a rag.

pips:

1. He forced a move from Porto and his subpar form there was mostly due to wanting away. Take of that what you will, but him being a risky or unproven buy is not a reasonable conclusion.

2 .You thought we should strengthen 1 month ago, but now that you've seen 2 league games you've changed your mind? Shows how well thought out your opinions are. Theres 36 more games in the League and 3 cup completitions to deal with.

3. Sounds like you're having a mini-existential crisis on what you really think about City.

are we Roman stealing Willian from Spurs now...

I'd also argue that if he wanted to go to United he would've.

What kind of shit is this?? And who the fuck are 'they':

This is a great move for any City fan, as it is a big step forward to consistently winning in the league and going farther in the chumps leage. Only a dortmund bastard like yourself would see it as a negative. Maybe you started supporting City because we were the underdogs on the rise (much like dortmund). Now that were taking an incredible step (unthinkably awesome for most fans) as a club to the big time, we no longer fit with your hipster/underdog ethos. So just fuck off with grace because we all know you eventually will anyways.

Fuck me if any more cunts think we can win things by "having FAITH in youth' I'm gonna totally blow a gasket. You need 2 TOP players for each position.

We are not a charity - or maybe how about the:

Dickson Etuhu/Ade Mike/Stephen Ireland /Ben Mee etc. etc trust

All players idiots have ranted about us selling because they were"the future of the club".

Fucking ridiculous. If they are good enough they play, if they aren't they don't whatever fucking age.

Got it?

Completely agree. The last time faith in youth won the CL was the 1995 Ajax team, and football has changed hugely (for better or worse) since then. A team like that winning the CL could pratically never happen nowadays.

Plus, we have more youth in the team this year than the last few years combined, while still signing great established players. So the moaning about lack of youth is retarted when you look at the bigger picture of how fucking great it is to be a City fan right now.

Well, not as ridiculous as judging a centre back on one pre season performance against Real Madrid when he's partnered with a 16-year old. The rest of the team played lousy in that game as well, fuck them off.

I'd say that Bayern for example have done decently with putting faith in Alaba and Müller and Badstuber under Van Gaal. Won the league and came second in the Champion's League against Mourinho's Inter, which I think is no shame. Barca seems to be doing well with their approach as well.

Personally, I like Manchester City's academy and although it's not a reason I became a fan, it's something that I'm proud of. I was proud of it during Cassel as well. I certainly think it's possible to bring through own products and make them stable parts of the squad, perhaps even make on or two players one of the stars if they're good enough, and still win things.

The signing of Otamendi is great btw. I expect Denayer to still be fourth choice, like he was before, if he stays this season. I think the purchase of KDB will put a bigger dent in the expectations of Ihenacho and Lopes though, so that'll be interesting to see as well. What they do I mean.

Well with the amount of whinging whenever a u20 player fails to get subbed on or included in the squad is crazy on here. Even when we sign a world class CB (in the position we were weakest last season) people whinge because Denayer won't get a chance.

We are making big moves forward as a club and too many people have a small time mindset. If the youth are good enough they'll play. Look at Nacho now part of the squad as an example after only really being here for 6 months. And Denayers gonna get some great experience in France.

Too many positives on all front for me to have patience with nitpickers and moaners. When you whinge about youth when we sign a world class player; get your head out of the sand and look at the bigger picture.

I think people are rightly wanting to see some youth coming through. It's exciting to see people make that transition, knowing they've been with the club since they were teenagers. I do agree with you that the Otamendi signing is fabstacular but I think a lot of people (including me) had little or no idea who he was before we signed him. Might have contributed a bit perhaps. I reckon that when people see him play there will be little moaning anyway :).

There's nothing small minded about wanting to see Denayer or Nacho get a few bits and pieces of game time, they're both exciting prospects. I'd say it was the exact opposite of small minded really.
