Have to admit I thought the same thing - sounds like OP continually provoked them - even if the original confrontation was unprovoked, which I also doubt

I think the OP has a genuine grievance which should be addressed but when the bloke kept quiet why not just let sleeping dogs lie? It's described like poking a stick at an angry bear.

I had a friend who had this same thing, a City fan who used to get abused by City fans because he had a cockney accent. Said travelling on the train with them was a harrowing experience.

I saw all of this going on as my seat is just across the aisle 221 row E 594 ,I wondered what the hell was going on and I saw you offering your hand of friendship and him refusing also saw his attempts at trying to punch you it was quite laughable to be honest [ not the incident but his attempt at trying to get to you] It seemed to go on for quite a while if I remember right it would quiten down for a bit then flare up again. I was a bit frustrated with what was going happening on the pitch so this is the reason why I was watching this going on, but like I said I couldn't figure out what it was all about.

I have had the odd disagreement with people at the match. A bloke next to me at the match and I, hated each others guts for about three seasons. Never felt the urge to report him even when things got a bit feisty. I don't quite understand that attitude. You didn't like each other, you had an exchange, why does it need to go further? Man up.

You my friend are part of the problem if you are an apologist for this guys behaviour. This guy unprovoked had a go at me - there is no excuse - so I answered him back - wouldn't you???

Stewards are always going to side with their match day regulars - fact of life.

And as to the "since we've been at the Etihad" boll*cks we're in danger of a "York away" spat

So I used to sit in the wooden seats in the Platt Lane - does that make me proper blue enough?

And to others who call me a glory hunter southerner - I grew up in Manc till I was 18 - moved down south for career - was at the LC final 76, Bradford away 89, etc etc etc bla blah

Anyway even if I was a southerner then the threat of verbal and physical violence is inexcusable. I wonder if the pond life 222 regular feels the need to make a complaint or would putting two words in print be too much of a stretch for his impaired intellectual capacities?

Personally, I'd expect a long time fan to be more hardened to such behaviour, but at the same time the stewards need to do more than merely tell someone threatening a fellow fan to "sit down" or "calm down". That's a pretty feeble way of dealing with potential violence.

Exactly - and as I state above have been here lifelong - was carried into my first match aged 4 by my old fella 1974 Platt Lane (so he tells me).

The issue here is simple

Drunk violent thug in public place makes unsolicited and unprovoked verbal threats to commit violence. Context is irrelevant - period.

I tried myself to get "the other side of the story" from the caveman on the night but he persisted in spitting out the adjective "bell end" at me like some sort of crazed Father Jack parody.

I'd kick him out and ban him - end of.

I was totally with you until I read this:

Indignant or not, I don't know what would possess you to fan the flames like that (especially during the match).

Doesn't excuse his behaviour though which is the main issue here - I'm human also and faced with irrational behaviour tried to understand it - perhaps I find it difficult to empathise with idiots

He threatened violence and there were numerous children present -this is unacceptable and "manning up" is what I've done via a coherent and rational complaint.

You disagreed with him, he says he'll give you a good hiding, so you want him banned, when watching City is quite possibly his lifelong passion? Have you considered you were probably getting right on his tits too? Two people getting heated at the game is hardly new. Put it down to experience. You don't need to be grassing him up later. It sounds like you were to blame to some degree, you can't exactly have been terrified if you kept revisiting the theme. How would you feel if you had your card removed over this row?
