The thoughts from then PSV fans after the Milan game mirrored my feelings about his performance to be honest. They're quite kind to him as well. He was incredibly passive and naive in both games if im being honest. Yeah he's classy on the ball but he was constantly out of position and had very little effect on breaking up anything and didn't really win any headers. He's got a long way to go. Let's hope he can go that far.

To be fair, I think we look at him from a totally different viewpoint than the PSV fans. For them it's all about being good enough for the Dutch League, which he obviously is already at 18. What's promising though, is that the Dutch league produces loads of good footballers, so if they think he's really promising, he probably is. What's less promising, is that Dutch defenders usually aren't as good as their midfield and attacking colleagues and usually never make it as far internationally. Plus, they can't fucking defend!

Can't disagree with that. I think they're instinctively kinder to younger players than we are cos they have to be really. The dutch league is awful defensively so i guess it's quite easy to stand out over there.

Sounds quite pleasing if you ask me. An 18 year old leading the defence of a side like PSV. Admittedly he is making mistakes but he's still very young for a centre half and positioning sense comes with game knowledge and experience.

He's all over the place defensively and sadly he was in the 3 games i watched of PSV's too....he looked totally out of his depth when I saw him. Just totally and utterly passive. The only thing i saw him do well was pass, which is a bit pointless when his job is a defender.

Happy to be wrong but the signs aren't promising in my humble opinion.

Have you not read the last few paragraphs? A traffic cone is a better defender than Bruma.

Don't be too disheartened by Rekik's struggles because you have to factor in the tiring task of covering for Bruma.

How can Bruma be a leader when he is the worst defender on the team?

He has committed a plethora of mistakes, received two red cards in his last three games and leads PSV in free-kicks conceded per league game (2.1).

Rekik is being thrown into the deep end by Cocu, who inadvertently has made the 19-year-old the leader at the back instead of Bruma, the Dutch Titus Bramble.

Bruma, once seen as the successor to John Terry at Chelsea, has been bailed out ad nauseum by Rekik.

Rekik is a world-class prospect, but he is not superman.

He will perform substantially better if he plays alongside an elite centre-back.

It is a learning curve for Rekik which will stand him in good stead for the future.

I will admit that Rekik hasn't looked sensational, often too hesitant & caught out on the wrong foot. His height could be an issue in the Premier League as well. However, I don't see how it's impossible that he could be a squaddie for us one day.

He is not Dedrick Boyata either, nor as good as any of the kids in the EDS or U18s.

Last time I watched him, Bruma was covering for Rekik turning like an oil tanker, not the other way round. Bruma is shit.

Rekik was slow, shit in the air & couldn't read the game last time I saw him. He was the same when we played him in the reserves v Liverpool, rags etc & the same when he played in the first team friendlies last season; a total liability.

I don't even need to see the videos I have seen Rekik

Here's a little update on what's being written about Rekik on Dutch PSV forums:

Finally a no-nonsense defender with the type of personality and physique that we've been missing here in the Netherlands for so many years. Gijp is talking bullshit when he's saying that Rekik is too small - he never loses a areal challenge! It's all about timing and jumping ability, and he's not even that small.

Really reminds me of Cannavaro. Runs the same way, quite small, but great in the air. Great charisma as well. Would be great if these kind of players could stay with us for 4-5 years ...

I think Rekik is way too rash and wild. OK, that might be the English way of defending, but he has to realise that this is the Dutch league. If he uses his head a bit more going into duels, he will be much better.

Rekik is an outstanding defender - he's got all it takes to reach the top. It would be fantastic if PSV could keep him for another year (but that will of course be close to impossible if we miss out on European football).

A delegation from Internazionale watched the PSV duo Karim Rekik and Memphis Depay on Sunday in the Amsterdam Arena, reports the Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio from Sky Italia on Twitter. "Inter has watched the two jewels of PSV, Rekik en Depay."

From what I have seen Rekik has been doing OK, but not great, in a very mediocre PSV team. I doubt he has what it takes to make it at the absolute top level, but the lad is still very young (turning 20 in December) and only time will tell. I think this loan will do him loads of good, though. The next should be to loan him to a Championship team, in my opinion, to see how he does in English football.

Are they aware he's only on loan? Someone wanting to keep him for 4-5 years but afraid of losing him if they miss out on European football and "Inter watching the jewels of PSV"?

Yes they are. But they are also aware that he's nowhere good enough for City yet, and that we most likely will look to keep on sending him out on loan.

Oh, and the four year comment was more a resigned sort of "why the fuck can't we ever keep good players for longer than a year or two before they're picked up by a foreign club with bigger financial muscles".

I would really like a centrehalf this window, but I think we may have to wait till the summer. Proper marquee signing, if Thiago Silva is being linked with other clubs, you'd think there is some reason. He's be a monster alongside Kompany.

The guys who are saying he's good in the air are really really wrong.

I can only assume he doesn't meet many Negredos over there.

You can't write a player off at that age, but when I saw him v Milan/Balotelli over two games, he was way below the standard of any of our current defendrs, even Garcia & Boyata. He started off average & got worse & worse. By the end he was embarrassing.

He should be treated as a player who probably won't make it but we keep an eye on him just in case he improves, rather than someone we expect to rely on.

To be fair, they don't meet many Negredo's in England either and they all fail in stopping him as well.

What a great second goal from him on Tuesday, he just bulldozed his way through.

Not only did he use his strength to get there in the first place he then dinked a beautiful little chip over the keeper whilst he was at full stretch. Most players would have just toe bunged it in to the keeper! Class
