Place: the swamp
Year: 1968
Occasion: the Manchester derby.
The rags topped the League, we were lying 2nd and a City win would take us to the top with only a few weeks of the season left. Tension was fever pitch and we Blues were packed like sardines in the scoreboard end at the swamp. Not long before kick off and the Kippax choir was winding up the noise levels to ear splitting proportions, to compete with the shitford end.
A teenaged blue spotted his mate and tried to shout him accross a few yards but got no response. He shouted several times. At that point, a group of Police, truncheons drawn , dived into the City fans and fought their way to hime and started to batter the lad round the head as they dragged him out. He'd done nothing wrong and it was a brutal unprovoked attack.
Despite the best efforts of the surrounding city fans, he was dragged over the wall and ontoi the cinder track round the poitch. The Police still battering him. It was carnage and the kid was bleeding heavily and doing his best to fight back. The City fans were going berserk...he was innocent. It was mayhem, photographers were snapping away to capture the bloodstained images for the next day's papers...
...from nowhere, this little fat feller appeared...STUART HALL. He got in between the fan and the Police and started to scream at the law. He was an absolute hero. he berated the Police...told them the kid was innocent...accused them of brutality. They had to stop and let the kid go...Stuart hall was like a little Jack Russell snapping at them. The kld was freed and allowed back into the stand. Stuart hall had stopped a riot, stopped a young City fan from being arrested for no reason and stopped him being beasten up by the Police too.
STUART HALL FOR ALL HIS DAFTNESS AND HIS CRAZINESS...WAS A FUCKIN HERO THAT NIGHT.
