I like Gareth Barry but for team with aspirations like we do he was simply starting to get too slow. He always had his shaky moments (I mean, he MUST hold the world record for handball call going against him) but he always more than made up for it with his positioning and overall control of the game. That wasn't so much the case anymore last season and that was down to him losing what little pace he ever had.
I love these situations where player clearly is at the end of his career but supporters are still left wanting when player leaves. Too often Clubs hold on for too long to players like Barry and it all turns bitter in the end.
Also, massive LOL at all the Villa fans who called him Judas for going to "lesser club for just money" when it was clear he wanted to cap his career with some titles. You dicks could've had him back now had you not acted like snotty punks.
I'd agree with all that if we replaced him with someone else who could do that job. No good being 5 yards quicker if you're 20 yards out of position.
Spot on PBL.
I'm disappointed we've let Barry go because he's been an excellent player for us. I could have understood letting him go if we had a replacement but we don't.
Pellegrini's preferred midfield partnership is Yaya-Fernandinho and neither of them are good enough defensively. Lesser teams have been exploiting that and our title challengers will most certainly have taken notice of it. It's the area which someone like Rooney will exploit and it's a big concern considering the derby is coming up very soon.
I don't get how you can make that judgement on Ferna with the little we've seen of him so far and considering he's learning the ropes in a new league.
I would've retained Barry myself, told Ferna to watch what he does and do it better.
It's not what Fernandiho does.
He is a runner, an interceptor not a defensive mid. He pinches the ball, sets up attacks, wins the odd header, mugs the occasional unsuspecting def mid or cb, plays a few nice passes beats a man or two, occasionally scores. He actually did most of that Saturday after a dodgy first 20, he finished the game almost like a Silva type role & actually looked far more of an attacking threat than Silva had done.
If we signed him to do Barry's job to the same standard, we need our fucking heads testing. May as well sign Mata & put him there.
