Keano helps out his mates

Keane: Nani deserved to see red
March 5, 2013

By Kevin Palmer
Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane believes referee Cuneyt Cakir "made the right call" when he sent off Nani in Tuesday night's Champions League battle with Real Madrid at Old Trafford.

Nani walks away from the Old Trafford pitch after being shown a red card
Irate United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was seething with rage as the last-16 tie was transformed by the contentious decision of the Turkish official to dismiss Nani for his high challenge on Alvaro Arbeloa in the 56th minute at a moment when the home side were in the ascendancy, but Keane had little sympathy for the banished Portuguese winger.

"The referee has made the right call," Keane told ITV Sport. "It's dangerous play, it's a red card. He knows there are other footballers on the pitch and to be fair to the referee, he took a few minutes, spoke to his assistant and decided it was a red card.

"I don't think the referee made the decision because he waited a couple of minutes while one of the players was getting treatment and I think it was the assistant that made the call. Whatever people are getting upset about it, but I think he made the right call.

"Any time I got sent off in my career, I always thought did I give the referee a chance to send me off? If the answer is yes, then it is out of your hands. Everyone is upset about it and United are slightly unlucky to go out, but it's dangerous play. Whether he meant it or not is irrelevant. It was dangerous play, red card.

"Whether the referee was brave or not, it was the right decision. Let's not forget that Nani is quick to go down, he is not always the bravest boy."

Keane went on to praise Real Madrid match winner Cristiano Ronaldo as "an £80 million snip" as he marked his return to Old Trafford with the goal that secured his team a place in the Champions League quarter-finals.

"It looked like a lot of money when Real Madrid paid £80 million for Ronaldo, but he looks like a snip now," Keane added. "What a fantastic player. He didn't have his best game against United, but he was fantastic."

cannot believe taggart or phelan didn't give a post match interview....surely there is an ITV contract, they pay a fortune to show champion league games !!!
no-one has died have they ?, Roberto has to answer questions (in last 2 years) every week about 'his future/balotelli/tevez' etc.
My husband keeps swearing...bless him, best team lost....my bottom.
My son has just got home from the Hartlepool v Colchester game, Colchester had 10 men for 47 minutes, but they still got a draw.
So you don't have to lose when a 'man down' eh Danepak Face ??!!! (Danepak produce Bacon...gettit ?)

Glad thhe rags were dumped out. Shows the fix of seeding where the established elite get easy passage. Talk of rags treble foiled and City failure to get out of CL group of death stage put in perspective

When the Utd team was announced it was clear they were paying massive attention to Alonso as the lynchpin of the Real side. Massive attention to the defensive side of the game rather than going for it with a full attacking display.

Maybe it was working and maybe Real would never have scored but there is always a chance they would have (nearly did with the Rafael hand ball)Then came the decision to send Nani off.I would have been disgusted if that had happened to a City player but it was dangerous play so maybe it was right as Roy Keane said.

That obviously changed the game but really it was what happened to each team that changed the game.Wellbeck was taken off Alonso duties and put back to help Evra. Mourinho immediately changed Modric for the right back.Utd lost composure and some heart and some discipline and in no time they were losing.

Massive credit to Mourinho and none at all for all of that to SAF.Credit utd for having a go in the final minutes but for a 10/15 minute spell they lost it.

Douglas Higginbottom wrote:Interesting game though isn't it? Do you think we could ever set out to play like that and have the discipline to actually do it?

Apart from the tactical aspects of playing Wellbeck on Alonso it's all about energy and pace. To a degree in all the defensive aspects as they close on the ball very quickly but especially in attacking where they use the pace of Wellbeck and Nani plus Rafael and even Evra.

We have 3 or even 4 midfield players who just don't have pace at all (Yaya might when he gets past the first 5 or so yards)and we just have Kun up front with any pace and he's not that quick.

These are the tactics Busby based his success. Get 10-11 players behind the ball and play on the break to give the impression of attacking football.Ferguson has followed. You have to give credit for the endergy and pace they show that City lack at times. hence the late and lucky winners they get.

I wanted united to progress so hinder their league chances then get beaten by Bayern but I'll do a moonwalk to that! I expect a arse kicking of Chelsea and Reading though! Also doesn't that mean Derby day is back to being on the weekend? Bring em on! Nani are you ok? Are you ok Nani ha ha ha

Sometimes a player can get 'kicked in the head' if going in low, against a 'foot up'....players don't ALWAYS get sent off for even that.
Consistency is the key with Refs....sadly lacking.
I wasn't watching the game as I was listening to Hartlepool v Colchester on Poolsplayer, seen the replay...it was harsh
But so what.
