Will City Really Bid For Torres?

Postby Fish111 » Sun Nov 29, 2009 7:45 am

Mail on Sunday:

Fernando Torres wanted by Manchester City's sheikhs - Liverpool fear losing their star striker to £50m swoopBy Bob

The billionaire owners of Manchester City are to rock ailing Liverpool by launching an audacious £50million bid for star striker Fernando Torres.
City aim to use their financial muscle to force Liverpool to sell their prize asset and believe that if the troubled Merseyside club fail to qualify for next season's Champions League, they will find it hard to refuse a big offer.

But City also know they would have to be able to offer Champions League football to have any chance of signing Torres and Mark Hughes' team will regard yesterday's 1-1 draw with Hull at Eastlands as an opportunity lost as they bid to deny Liverpool a top-four finish.
A source said: 'Make no mistake about it, this club is ambitious. They believe there is not a player in the world who is outside their budget and that includes Torres.
'The owners are in it for the long haul. Initially, their number one target is the Champions League next season. But they see that only as the launching pad for greater things. They are now probably the wealthiest club on the globe - now they want to be the best.'
Liverpool, debt-ridden and eliminated at the group stage of the Champions League for the first time in manager Rafael Benitez's fiveyear reign, have never been so vulnerable to rich predators like City and the Anfield crisis would deepen today if they lose at Everton.

I think the obvious sticking point would be the fact that probably we will not be in the champions league next year, so why would he come to us apart from the money?

Makes you wonder what might have happened had Sven been given the job a few weeks earlier than when he turned up. He was chasing Torres too and that would have been a great statement.

Break the bank and get him in in January Mr. Manager - whoever you are ! The guy is class and him and Villa might just push us into CL contention.

In the cold light of day we haven't a prayer of getting him the way we are playing would anyone join us of his quality?

Can't see it happening, would be great if it did though.

I think after the Kaka bid it would take time before we made another major bid like this I still think it's too soon. If we do it in January and get bounced we will be a laughing stock. We will only go in for it if we are 100% it will be accepted. I also think getting a manager who the player will want to work with is needed. Also we should do a double and go for Villa too I mean if we get accepted bids for both of them we can use each of them against each other to help our cause :). Imagine that strike force? Torres and Villa with Ade being used in a rotation?

Absolutely no chance.

Liverpool are a bigger club than us and Torres seems to genuinely want to be at Liverpool, hence his new contract in the summer and when you hear him in interviews, he comes across as quite sincere.

Yes Liverpool have well-documented financial issues and these would be exacerabated if they failed to qualify for next season's Champions League, but even if they were forced to sell him, he would not be coming to us, more likely Barcelona or a club with that sort of profile. Perhaps in a couple of years we can attract one of the best two strikers in the world - the other being Drogba in my opinion, but not until then

See I got to their and then realised what you were writing was meaningless. Also Torres has clearly said if he ever goes back to Spain he would only ever go back to his old club who now could not afford him so thats a non issue. There isn't any team outside England except for maybe AC Milan (with the Kaka money) Who could afford him. Unless the US decides he is the new David Beckscum but I doubt it.

So you don't think Drogba's a top class striker?? And no i don't see Torres pitching up at Eastlands any time in the next couple of years - i'm being realistic - he does love being at Liverpool and i reckon even if they did miss out on top 4 this season, he's the type of person who would seem to want to stay at Anfield and right the wrongs as would Gerrard.

I didn't say that I think he is top class mate definitely in the top 10 strikers but only just! Definitely in the top 2!

Vhero, either you are agreeing with me or it is a typo error on your part, which is it? Also, who are the strikers that you think are better than Drogba in the world?

Whether they want to come is another thing

Every single player will be thinking about money when they are choosing wherever or not to go to that club who have put a bid in!
We can put in a big bid yes and i would love to see a big bid!! But i just cant see us signing him! Liverpool wont sell him in January, Half way through the season anyway!

But we could put a clause in saying if we dont secure champions league football this season then he can go back to liverpool and Liverpool pay us the money back we payed for them!

theres no place for torres in the squad weve got ade and tevez and there both top strikers, this is the reason why were in the situation were in, because the clubs signing striker after striker. Id prefer to spend the 50 mil on maicon. What we need now is to not conceed because scoring isnt our problem defending is if anything we should buy babel from liverpool. He doesnt want to be there and we could play him on the left and put robbie on the right instead of shauny then give the team till the end of the season to play together and next season we'll be right up there were as 1 more striker on the list wont do that for us
