Teletext phrases like:

'Bolton in Benjani swoop'
'...hope to prise Benjani away.....'
'......cut price 1.5 million'
'..City to lose ace to Bolton...'

are flying about the news wires.

Alioune - he is piss poor.

We've had far worse and when he arrived at the club (only 21 months ago) he was the best centre-forward we had. He's nowhere near good enough to even make our bench and, yes, he's very limited. I just don't really see much point in making a thread to take the piss. I wonder sometimes if some posters were actually around to watch when we had genuinely shite players. It didn't work out, so what. I still think he'll go to a lesser team and score a handful (not a hatful) of useful goals. There's a prediction and you can quote me on it. If he goes to, say, either Bolton or Portsmouth in January and scores 6/7/8 goals in the league before the season is out, I think it would be fair to conclude that he's a competent Premier League striker.

Trueblue82 didn't start the thread to take the piss, in fact he only posted a news item and never even commented on it himself. It's us who have taken the piss because Benjani is kack, good luck to him [strike]if[/strike] when he goes.

If that's an attempt to take the piss I think you've missed the point of what I was saying. I wouldn't call him "good", but I'd say he's far from "shite".

Fair point. I wasn't singling out the thread-starter but it just makes me cringe when I see all these threads that degenerate into taking the piss out of players we heralded when they signed not all that long ago. It's as though some people forget how shit we've been as a unit for MANY years. I still think that Benjani won't end up on many nostalgic lists of joke players such as Gerry Creaney, Tony Scully and Darren Wassell - true shite. For where we were at the time, Benjani was a reasonable signing. Injuries and the signing of better players has made him surplus to requirements and it is time for him to move on. That's all.

Absolutely, I don't feel Benjani deserves stick. He wasn't fantastic for us granted, but he was an alright player, who had a pretty good scoring record people seem to have forgotten. He'll do well at a bottom half club - there are plenty of teams that need someone who can find the back of the net with a degree of regularity.
