Football Trivia

Postby Arjan Van Schotte » Mon Dec 03, 2012 8:51 pm

A place to post little known facts about our beautiful game....

DYK - in 1933 the owners of Charlton Athletic tried to move them to Johannesburg for tax purposes?

In view of the MK Dons/Real Wimbledon "derby" this weekend, DYK that the FA actually approved the move of Wimbledon to Dublin, but it was the FAI that veto'd it?

The first football international that didn't involve a british side was USA -v- Canada in 1885...

The first "non-white" player to play for england was certainly not viv anderson - it was Frank Wong Soo, who got 9 caps for england, and then went on to have a successful career as a manager, mainly in sweden, but also at scunthorpe united.

The current holders of the british home champions are northern ireland, and england were last in that tournament. Name the year?

Our good friend Mark Lawrenson has the distinction of being the only english-born player in liverpool's fa cup winning team of 1986. ironically, he played for the ROI at international level. Also, he was the first footballer to be caught felching a dog in widnes.
"Whatever it is that we "bought" - we didn't put it up for sale..."

Have you got a source for this? Googled it, but couldn't come up with anything. Got a mate who's a massive Charlton fan out here...

Why do some clubs have triangular corner flags and other clubs square flags? Any team with triangular flags has won the fa cup.

Did you learn that from two Welsh boys in a bath?

Apparently, Arbroath is the nearest football ground to the sea. I heard that on the radio today. Not that interesting, and possibly untrue.

For those who doesn't know History:
When, which Club, which Ground, which Competition recorded the the highest attendance of all time in the English Game... hehehe.

1. "unintelligible language"
2. "ACID QUEEN"
3. "never once fails to turn a football thread into a himseelf thread"
4. "thumbs stalker often resulting in repetitive thumb strain"
5. ignore the cunt. he's on permantent wum mission. only TIDs may know City

You'd need to make a very good psychiatrist in order to guess what next in a eight yrs long line of hatred...

no internet source, no. but the gilksten (sp?) family tried to do it, got that from a very trusted ex-director of CAFC. he also said that they also proposed an expansion of the valley to 200,000, but the local council turned them down...and it was totally feasible and would have probably made them the biggest club right now..... on checking some stuff, i think he was telling the truth!

Also I should have questioned more precisely: home attendance record. Thanks Dronny, my fault.

I thought it was Peterhead? Sure it was mentioned in a match report when Rangers played them on the first game of this season.

That's pretty fascinating. I love hearing 'what could have been' stories like that. Can you gauge whether the Gilksten family are well-known by Charlton fans (she's an ex-season ticket holder), or will I just be faced with a blank "what the hell are you talking about?" stare?
