Training Tuesday 24/11

Postby Douglas Higginbottom » Tue Nov 24, 2009 2:03 pm

Normal service resumed today at Carrington as I turned up on time and the weather was foul with a howling wind and driving rain. The pitch used today was the furthest from the buildings and clearly a few of the players had not assessed how bad it was as one of the coaching team was sent away for more hats and tops.

No Barry and Toure today as they recovered from their knocks and both Bellers and Petrov were not out at the start but came later to work hard with fitness coaches.Bellers in fact joined in the football later. Silvinho also came out much later on and of course those who played last night in the reserves were not involved. It's interesting watching training as often as I do to be able to consider the mood of the camp and especially compare it from week to week after the results we get. At no time have I ever detected a negative vibe within the group even after the one defeat or the draws at home which were clearly like defeats.

That doesnt mean they come in happy go lucky as if it hadn't happened but they retain a positive outlook whilst at the same time a determination to put things right. That's very much how it felt to me today as it was a really good hard session with everyone working very well. Eddie and the rest of the coaches must have a book full of different warm up exercises and today I saw a few that I havent seen them do before. Somebody asked recently if they overtrain and put too much emphasis on strength as against skill and tactical stuff but in the warm up stuff it's very much general fitness and different exercises to stretch pretty well everything so that silly injuries are not picked up. Touch wood it seems to be working on that score.

A variety of football drills followed which included 2 on 2 attacking , then 4 on 4. Some of the work going on here was excellent and regularly key aspects were shouted out as it was going on. Really good stuff and if either team came out on top it was the defences after a difficult start. Make no mistake they are all fully aware that it is essential to be fully concentrated 100% of the time and when they are not they don't get away with it. Everything aimed at not making those silly mistakes that have been so costly for us so far this season.

Then it moved onto a game on about a 3/4 pitch and it continued to be very competitive. Some very strong play all over the pitch. A really good session to watch.A few little things worth a mention.

I thought Tevez today was real quality. When he is attacking and really buzzing he is a nightmare to mark. Best I have seen him today.
A couple of runs by NDJ from deep were superb although I think his appeal for a pen at the end of one was a bit hopeful.
Robinho is close to ready I would say and his tracking baack on occasion plus his part when we were pressing high was very good.Knocking Ade over once was both fun and worrying and I am sure somebody told Ade to get into the gym!
I doubt Weiss enjoyed the competitiveness when he took a knock late on but he was quite quickly back up and at it. He worked really hard today yet again.
Another good effort today from Micah. Fair play to him in his quest to get selected again.

Thanks Doug. Your reports do bring a touch of real events to the site, amid all our speculation and opinion.

Tevez seems to be getting better, which can only be good. I fancy it will be him playing on Saturday and Barry rested, with a more attacking formation. Maybe even Robinho for Bellers as well, who knows?

DeJong is outstanding for me and I think it was a clear error leaving him out against Burnley, which may well have exposed our lousy defenders a bit. Loved the way he put Babel out of the game Saturday.

So that Benayoun could come on....?

That said, it's not his first classic "reducer" of the season.

Cheers Doug - top top work.

I have to say that I was impressed (as everyone else) by Tevez when he came on

The ball he played for SWP for the goal was absolutely exquisite

Not yet .They played on a pitch with no fences around today so it was open for anyone to see.
Whether I get a look in for the next sessions which are likely to be behind fencing only time will tell.

But we had a signature campaign and everything...we need Carl Tilson, he knows how to get things done, after all, he signed SWP.

I think Tevez is an interesting one.We all know the reputation he had at the swamp of being an impact player , a great sub and not really a starter and for us so far he hasnt been at his best. Some of that might have just been getting used to new things ( I don't think he was an instant superstar at WHU) and also I don't think he was fully fit to start with and for a while. maybe all things will come together and he will just get better and better.

One thing for certain for me is that he shouldnt be isolated up front to get the best out of him. He thrives on being involved , plays lovely one twos and moves around the ball so that he is very hard to defend against. Maybe I am wrong that it was his best so far today but it was certainly good. Perhaps he was just trying to keep warm!

Cheers Douglas,

[strike]Normal service, does that mean they sorted you with the pass? We all know there was no way they could keep you out for long but that was surprisingly quick, if so.[/strike] Took to long to post!

Good to hear about Tevez, though I think he's done well every game and I actually thought he would start ahead of Bellamy on saturday. Feel a bit sorry of Weiss as he's been so promising and really worthy of a chance but with players coming back from injury, I just feel he will have to be very, very patient. So many players that "need matches" atm

Bellers presumably hasn't been fit for a couple of weeks as he just isn't terrorising defences as he was in his POTM month, hopefully woth other options we can rest him till properly fit

It wasn't just the ball either, it was the work he did to nick the ball of Skrtel in the corner. Made something out of absolutely nothing.

I think he's gonna be immense now that he's fit.
