Not Finishing Top 4 No disaster

Postby CITYTILLIDIE11 » Mon Nov 16, 2009 5:11 pm

Hughes says it is not the end of the World if we don’t finish in the top 4 this season. Strange considering failing to qualify for the Europa League last season was seen as a blessing in disguise for this seasons challenge on the top 4.

Seems to me he has reservations we might not be able to beat the now best in the World (no longer an in disarray Liverpool)

Not going to start waffling on suffice to say it seems like a concerted PR campaign to break the news to us all that the top 4 looks a bit to far for us this season.

Absolutely not surprised

Time to lower the expectations, it’s a massive job don’t you know.

Onwards and upwards with Sparky,it might be time to give him a New 5 Year contract to see the Job through I don’t think 3 years will be long enough.

Rome wasn’t built in a day though

He has said nothing wrong in that entire article, he has always avoided answering the media with an exact number on league position. Any manager will say the same as they know how twisted the media are. Good article that CitytillIdie11, nothing negative at all about it.

Wasn't set as a target publiclly but no doubt after spending that much money our owner would expect 4th at least. No way would they be happy with 6th or something after spending that much cash! Time is fine but not cash he may be a billionaire but it doesn't mean he likes throwing it at players.

Yes you are right it was never mentioned as an official target.

Totally unacceptable to have unrealistic expectations as some do.

At least Mark is now clarifying the situation prior to some of the biggest games in our season; a Cynic would say he is already pedalling excuses.

To be honest I admire is honesty, because in my opinion we don’t have a cat in hells chance of finishing Top 4, maybe not even top 6, and I wont be surprised if we get battered at Liverpool on Saturday, followed by more defeats, at least Mark is realistic enough to know that it is going to take a little bit longer.

who knows he might just be trying to deflect some media interest so that he can get the team to think only about the job in hand and thats simply to win this weekend. In doing so will keep us nicely with in reach of the top 4 and at worst top 5.

I was under the impression that top 6 was the target so finishing 5th or 6th certainly wouldn't be a disaster for me

I think your right Vhero, i as a fan expect a solid top six finish but the owners must surely be eyeing a top four spot after what they have laid out financially. I also think a lot of fans are expecting a top four place this season as well but i personally don't think we have a good enough squad to achieve that this year.

I disagree Fish, the owners must know that throwing money at it will not add instant success, also now known as "pot noodle Syndrome". They are patient and dont expect miracles. I was interested to hear the thoughts of the UAE fans in Abu Dhabi after the game. They were saying it is a project and success is not expected for 2-3 years.

As a city fan for many years who has been to hell and back and been ridiculed every week because of it (just like you all). The fact that we expect success soon is incredible. I am 39 and have never seen us win anything (being 6 doesnt count), I cant wait, I know I will cry buckets.

I bet it was very interesting listening to the UAE fans talking about City WW and i'm glad to hear that instant success isn't being demanded by the owners. It'll be hard to keep the expectations of the fans tempered though for another 2 or 3 years. I cannot wait for our captain to lift a trophy, it would mean the world to me and would be a lot more satisfying than a top four finish.

I've been there as well mate and being a similar age know exactly where you are coming from. What I find astounding is that people expect this to happen overnight, as if the magic wand had been passed over the City Stadium. And then, to spout such hype in an attempt to discredit members of our club when the truth is far removed.

One question if anyone can answer, and definately for the OP. How many clubs have spent large and moved from a lower/mid table club to a certain top 4 contender in the amount of time you are expecting it now?

Said 5th before season started and don't see any reason to panic at the moment, get a result at the dippers and then on to a hugely important week with Hull and Chelsea coming to coms and the Qf.

Bring it on.
