Were the Irish media as critical of Glenn Whelan's performance yesterday?

Do you think the defensive midfielder who breaks up the opposition play, can play in defense also and gets stuck into tackles was bought to replaced Elano?

I thought we had NDJ for that and it somewhat seems to be stiffling our attacking with both Gareth and Nigel on the pitch.
I had assumed that Gareth was a bit more attack minded and could do that job like his predecessor had but he seems somewhat lacking in that department to me.

because he is nothing like Elano, you are comparing apples and oranges. If you think Barry was the same as Elano... then just think about the 1st choice England midfield Beckham, Lampard, Gerrard, Barry!!!! Where is the defensive midfielder? Its barry. Elano doesnt even know what his own half of the pitch looks like.

Maybe youre right about Elano and Gareth having different roles but I wonder if Stevie was meant to be our creative player and be able to fill the role that Elano used to play, then why has he dropped him for the past few games.
Is it cos he thought Gareth would be able to step up to the mark in which case I think, he has been a liitle short.
And the pundits before the England / Brazil game were comenting on how this team is different from Brazil teams in the past that it was more hardworking,so the critisisim that Elano hasnt seen his own half is somewhat harsh methinks.

I think Ireland was seen as the answer and he certainly proved it last season, the reason for being dropped is purely his poor form IMO. Elano is a brilliant player when he wants to be which is the problem, he wasn't up to being his brilliant self often enough. I will never forget Sven putting him at Right back, I am sure I fainted ;-O Elano went to the paul scholes school of tackling!

It's pretty hard to defend a professional footballer who fails to play more than 65mins of the game because he's too tired to carry on. If Elano had applied himself correctly as an athlete then he could of become a world star. He is destined to be a flashbang though.
