Virgin Galactic, the commercial space flight company owned by Sir Richard Branson and Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the owner of English Premier League club Manchester City, hopes to launch flights from Scotland.

The company is keen to launch flights into polar orbit from RAF Lossiemouth in Moray. Its WhiteKnightTwo spacecraft can carry six commercial passengers and is designed to travel at more than 2,500 miles per hour to a height of more than 65 miles.

Aabar Investments, a company majority-owned by Sheikh Mansour, bought a 32 per cent stake in Virgin Galactic in August for US$280 million

Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al-Nahyan, the owner of Manchester City, will spend US$280 million to buy a stake in Virgin Galactic, Sir Richard Branson's commercial space flight business.

Mansour, who made a huge profit last month selling shares in Barclays, has acquired 32 per cent of the venture, which aims to operate commercial space flights within the next three years. The Manchester City owner will also contribute US$100 million towards developing Virgin Galactic's satellite business.

The company claims to have collected US$40 million from prospective space tourists, including former Formula One driver Niki Lauda.
