Mark Hughes believes that City's dazzling array of attacking talent has given his Champions League chasers the confidence to go for victory in every match.
The Blues boss signed Emmanuel Adebayor, Carlos Tevez and Roque Santa Cruz in the summer with Robinho and Craig Bellamy already on board for a strike force to rival the best. Now, combined with a new mental toughness that permeates the whole team, Hughes reckons his Carling Cup quarter-finalists are perfectly equipped to be genuine winners this season.

As City prepared for Sunday's Premier League match at promoted Birmingham, the manager said: "With the quality of players we've got, we are always likely to score goals so we are always confident of going up against anybody. It's always difficult going to St Andrews but the way we are playing, we fancy ourselves against anybody. At home you expect Birmingham to be a big test but we go into games expecting to win, we don't just hope."

The Blues' last two away games at Aston Villa and Wigan have produced determined performances and priceless points from matches that might easily have been lost last season, he added. "Our resilience is the big difference away from home this year. We are going to need those qualities over a long hard season, because we are going to go to places where we are not in the ascendancy and we'll have to see games out."

City were able to rest players such as Bellamy for the 5-1 midweek win over Scunthorpe and Hughes was also able to take workaholic Gareth Barry off early with his work well done. Hughes said: "We'll be fresh and ready. The cup game was good for competition - a lot of guys are trying to get into the team, and it keeps them all on their toes. We're in good shape at the moment."

Lescott loves life at Eastlands
Manchester City - Joleon Lescott is convinced he can achieve success

Joleon Lescott feels he was harshly criticised over his move from Everton to Manchester City, but couldn’t be happier these days.

Lescott was accused of having a ‘poor attitude’ in the closing stages of his Goodison career, but he believes he deserved better after giving his all to the Everton cause. The City centre back also insists his switch from Merseyside to Manchester wasn’t about money – it was purely about ambition.

Lescott said: "Moving to City was one of the best days of my life. It was not about the money, I remember hearing one of the coaches at Everton had said that about me. And I thought, 'how could you say that when you know me as well as you do?'. "Believe me, I had a great contract at Everton. I didn't need any more.

"But City represented a chance to achieve real success faster than it was going to happen at Everton. People talk about David Moyes maybe one day going to Manchester United, and that's fine because managers can afford to wait. "But as a player you do not have that luxury, and I felt I couldn't wait. I felt that when I joined City, that they were better equipped than Everton to finish fourth.

"I reached the FA Cup final with them last season, which was an achievement. The next step is to win a trophy, and I sense that feeling. There are World Cup players here, winners here, and if we are all pushing in the same direction then we should achieve things,” added Lescott who was relieved to get his first City goal at the weekend after gaining a reputation as a goalscoring centre back at Everton. He said: "I did get a bit of a reputation for goals from set-pieces, so it is nice to have finally scored one for City. Every time I go up now someone on the bench says, you have to score. They think I should have scored a few more by now. "We work really hard in training on set-pieces, but at the moment we are more concerned with keeping clean sheets.”
