City trivia help needed

Postby Wonderwall » Thu Oct 29, 2009 5:30 pm

I have been asked this question

Manchester City v Scunthorpe, Maine Road, League Division 2, Late 50’s or very early 60’s, just before Christmas. City won 8-1 or could have been 9-1. Scunthorpe keeper comes out to edge of the penalty area and boots the ball into the City half, one bounce and Matt Gray, Derrick Kevan, Alex Harley or A.N.Other volleys the ball back up field, over the keepers head and into the net. Who was the player. I think there were two Gray brothers playing for City at the time and it was the other one.

Can you help??

I can't remember the player but I can nail the game for you...
Boxing Day, 1963 @ Maine Road...City beat Scunthorpe 8-1.
Matt Gray and Jimmy Murray both got hat tricks and Derek Kevan scored the other 2.
Matt Gray never had a brother playing for City...and though I am nowhere near certain, somerthing in the back of my head keeps saying Matt Grray...but I could be talking out of my arse on that particular goal.

Sorry mate...the best I can do for you.

You're dead on there mate, classic story from my old man of his youth!

Matt Gray is his name!

That was just luck Bob.

I remembered that particular Xmas because it was our 1st season in the old Div 2 after relegation the previous season. We were one the favourites for promotion but it wasn't going as well as we thought it should. Over Xmas, we came alive and battered Rotherham 6-1, Scunthorpe 8-1 and 2 days later beat Scunthorpe again (away) 4-2.
We started to think we could do it but suffered from "typical City2 and the season faded to 6th.

Always best to come on here with the questions for John to answer so we can reap the benefit of his knowledge and memory. I have the vaguest memory of it now it gets mentioned but wouldnt have remembered any detail at all even though I recall watching all those players

Thank Gents...Funny I can remember stuff from that many years ago but nowadays I have difficulty remembering if I am trying to get my leg over or bringing it back....:-)

Carl,
Have just checked my email inbox and there is no reply from young Chris Nield, who promised to look into our lost history.
He seems to have diasappeared off the scene, though he may still be around the favoured Bluemoon site.
Not sure who/what the best way forward is from here. I also emailed Gary James who is the well known writer and City historian for help but got no reponse ...anybody who can throw a name into the hat, or a route to take into the club?

Failing that...anyone know His Excellency Sheik Mansour@s email address?...

cheer for all the help fellas

John,

I cannot believe the club have not responded after their "your voice matters" bullshit as the beginning. This is a very important subject and its just plain ignorant not to reply.

If anyone can help here, please let us know as we would love the club to acknowledge the early years.

Back to the original topic, it was 8-1, 26th December 1963, the scorers were Gray(3), Murray(3), Kevan(2).

The lineup was: Dowd, Leivers, Sear, Kennedy, Wood, Oakes, Young, Gray, Murray, Kevan, Wagstaffe.
