Notts County striker Lee Hughes has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault.
The League One star was held after police were called to the team's hotel in Croydon, south London, on Saturday night.
The 35-year-old was taken into custody following the alleged incident involving a woman the night before his team's FA cup fixture against Sutton United. He was later released on bail.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "Police were called at approximately 11.10pm on Saturday December 3 to a hotel in Purley Way, Croydon, following an allegation of sexual assault.
"A man, aged 35, was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and taken into custody at a south London police station. He was subsequently bailed to a date in late January pending further investigation by officers from Croydon borough."
Notts County said it was aware that an allegation had been made.
The club said in a statement: "Notts County can confirm that the club are aware of an alleged incident involving one of our players at the team's hotel on Saturday, December 3. As this is a police matter, the club will be making no further comment on this incident."
Hughes, who has played for Notts County since 2009 after leaving Oldham Athletic, had his contract at the club extended in October by another 18 months.

Innocent until proven guilty. How many of these footballer rape claims ever have any substance?
His previous conviction (for which he did his time) has nothing to do with this. One death by dangerous driving rap doth not a sexual predator make. Let's not get hysterical because of who it is.

Everyone knows that refusing to play for your team is the biggest crime a footballer can commit.

Regardless of whether this is true or not, it used to knock me sick seeing that cuntish celebration of his every time he scored a goal knowing what he had done.
Obviously hope it turns out it isn't true but a nice career ending injury for him at the weekend wouldn't go amiss.

I know this won't be a popular addition to the thread but in 35 years of watching City the most spectacular goal I've seen scored against us was by Lee Hughes.
I think he was playing for West Brummidge then and he was playing down the left and unleashed one from all of 35 yards that sailed into our top right. Was Seaman in goal? I don't remember but I do remember clapping.
Still it just goes to show. Er what? No idea. But thought I'd see if anyone else remembers it.

I remember that goal as well. It can't have been Seaman because he scored it at Maine Road, right in front of where my seat was in the corner of the North Stand. Schmeichel would be my guess.
I think we won that game either 2-1 or 3-1, but I can't say for certain.
EDIT: I've just found the stats for the game following a long search. It was way back in the old Division One in 1999-2000. We won 2-1.
Wow. Lifetime ago.

Until you said that, I could've sworn that I saw Seaman line up alongside George Weah for us, sitting in the Gene Kelly stand at Maine Road. I only ever sat there twice- once when Weah played, and once in the Edghill v Coventry debacle. How time flies.
