...what a long strange trip its been!
I just heard Macken got on the score sheet today: it seems like only yesterday when he were relying on him for goals!
Or was I dreaming?

His contribution in the Spurs away in the FA cup a few years ago taught me never to leave early for the train.

And from Robert Taylor to Sergio Aguero.
Mind you, "From Jon Macken to Robbie Fowler and Nicolas Anelka" sounds impressive, too, even though they were actually contemporaries.

Macken had the fantastic ability of getting into 1 on 1 positions with the keeper and then kicking it straight at them. Frustrating. Still, he played well in the 3-4.

Yeah, he was much better from the half way line. ;)
Balotelli......that's a brilliant finish.

Just looking up his Wiki article last night it seems he hasn't exactly been a prolific goalscorer in the lower divisions, either

I can probably count his good performances for us on one hand?

best goal I ever saw Macken score, of course it was for Preston! Was a strange signing, a striker we didn't need & didn't have the quality to move us on a level

To be honest I can't help following with interest any and all of our OBs and particularly right now Der Bomber who is doing a passable job as manager at Brentford.
Chris Shuker was doing a good job at one of the lower division club a few years back bless him and SWPs little brother (ha ha) is regularly on the scoresheet in the 3rd division. Most fascinatingly of all a while back I came across Ady Mike who bizarrely had put on 3 stone and was proving a top buy for FCUM I kid you not.
Whatever happened to Michael Vonk I wonder? It appears he is head coach at Sparta Rotterdam

It was a beautiful hit. Also nice for Etuhu that Preston were, at least for 90 minutes, a better club than City.
Vonk's manager of Sparta now. I was too young and we had to little coverage here for me to really remember anything about the mid 90's teams. Probably a good thing.

I've got a big soft spot for Vass. I kinda liked Corradi too.....mainly for his celebrations
Mpenza and Benjani on the other hand....utter toss; as was Macken

I've heard Steve Daley's career described as many things, but controversial wasn't one of them.

I've gone all nostalgic now and randomly looking up online ex players as they occur to me. In January 2008 Eike Immel was a contestant at Ich bin ein Star – Holt mich hier raus!, the German edition of I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!.
That sounds like a show with an even more surreal idea of what constitutes celebrity status than even we can come up with.

Seems like revisionist history to me with Mpenza - he did well and probably saved us from relegation. One of the better free transfers we ever picked up.
Benjani/Macken/Corradi were all awful though. Vass was decent provided no one wanted to argue with you about his worth ethic. He and Cole formed a good partnership in that one season.
