You see I didn't call you a fucktard, mainly because I am trying to remain civil here. If we cannot remain civil to one another let me know, I am quite good at that too.

You said England were in no danger of finishing anywhere but top.

I said that Ukraine and Croatia are very real threats and had a good track record and even managed to beat England to a spot for the 2008 Euro's.

You then said, that was your point that you can only beat what's in front of you.

While that point is correct albeit an awful cliche, that was not the point you made initially.

The point you made initially was in fact, wrong.

No Slim lad, you are putting words in my mouth! I said that England were favourites to win the group (which they were) for the Euro's and that now we had a decent manager, there wasn't much in the way of our qualification. You, on the other hand, chose to change the criteria, subtley but for sure, to make me sound a Fucktard, with your quaint mention in your original post to me.

So the point I made intially was not wrong, just corrupted!

I think those are the only 2, and yes reyna was captain for about as long as he was with the national team.

I think it is a 'big deal' for us to have players in the prem because it represents improvement, obviously for the individual players but also great promise for the national team as a whole. But I'd say we like to see players go to any of the top leagues, it can only help us improve. You have to play with the best to get better after all.

For the national side, what's the general proportion of players who play their club football in the US as opposed to abroad?

This seems to have been lost, but well worthy of an answer!

The first string are almost completely foreign based ... with the exception of donovan I believe. He has the skill (though overrated) to make it in a bigger league, but not the mentality at all. It's disappointing to say the least.

the second string are pretty much all home-league based. That being said, anyone with any ambition/talent wants to get out of the mls as soon as possible ... or atleast should want to in my opinion. I think one reason why freddy adu "flopped" though he's still only 20(?) is that he stayed in the mls so long ... and started so young. He was starting in the MLS when he was 14. Should have been at a big club being developed by top coaches. Thankfully Altidore has left sooner, and has a decent chance of unlearning all the shit he learned in MLS from shit coaches.

edit: most GK's who have a realistic shot of starting are foreign based (Howard, Guzan, etc ...)

Must be quite a dilemma - them playing abroad will make them better players and strengthen your national team, but at the expense of the domestic game.

Edit: you mention GKs, there seem to be a lot of US keepers in English football, certainly a higher proportion than any other position.

That's the same for most countries, though, England, Spain, Italy, Germany being the exceptions.

1. England
2. Spain
3. Germany
4. Italy
5. France
6. Brazil
7. Argentina
8. Holland
9. Portugal
10. Mexico

Don't know too much about the South/Latin American leagues, though.
Holland and Portugal is a toss up. The top in Portugal is better, but I think the overall standard of the Dutch is better. That's the same reason as to why I place the German league ahead of the Italian.

Seems we produce alot of quality GK's ... dunno why exactly, except maybe that all our most popular sports concentrate on eye-hand coordination. baseball, football, basketball. Having played Baseball my whole life, I always found it much easier to track a soccer ball, and so always made a decent keeper ... though my preferred position is striker. Being able to use hands seems very natural and easy for me.

I dunno man ... the mexican league is pretty shit. I would put scotland ahead of that. I also think the German league has definitely improved but myself would switch them with italy

Wow.

Heartbreak for Costa Rica. They were in tears coming off the pitch.

Oh, forgot about the Russian league. And the Turkish. And the Ukrainian. All three could give Portugal and Holland a good run.
