You are being out of order mate.

If you've got a point, wanna hurry up and make it?

Calling some random fellers mother whore is well out of order. If you'd do that to me in real life...... well you wouldn't do it again. Comprende?
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

I think she would have a problem! Not because she is a woman but because of her previous experiences.

As Sister of Fu pointed out, women's football is virtually different sport. A bit like Mens tennis and Womens tennis. Essentially the same game with the same rules but still played totally differently.

Women's football is less physical, lacks pace and power and relies more on individual abilities to affect the game. The players are not as equal on the pitch and one or two top players in the team are normally miles better than the rest, almost unstoppable and do something which ultimately settles the match.

Therefore the tactics, set plays, organisational structure etc, need to be completely different than in top flight Men's football and I doubt even hope Powell would have the experience to adapt and deal with that.

I would agree though that a start in non league football would be interesting and give her a chance to learn and progress through the ranks.
Relax ... It's only a message board in hyperspace!!

I think they should start from the bottom as well. Time and time again it has been proved how in modern game you can't just jump from playing to top level management. But that's another story.

I think the question has several layers to it

1) Would a board of directors ever take a chance on being the first club to employ a female manager (....or even less likely an openly gay manager....or player)

2) Would male players ever respond to someone who could never have played the game they are coaching (this links into the point that others have made that mens and womens football really are two different games, rather than the same games played by different sexes)

and

3) Would the management team of any club feel comfortable employing someone who could turn round and say she was pregnant and taking time off to have a family

The final one I know is a thorny one but the simple fact is that there are still relatively few women at the top end of any elite profession (and football management would be a career that falls into that category). There are women there but they are invariably those who choose not to have a family and/or those who have either a very supportive partner/family or have kids brought up by childminding staff. The whole concept of a proper work/life balance is a nonsense at the very upper reaches of any high flying career. Work has priority....and most women (completely understandably) are not willing to make that trade-off.

So, for me, whilst in theory i don't think it is unrealistic to say a woman could do it.....I don't think I would ever see this in my lifetime (or afterwards).

What makes you think she has less knowledge of players? Would a male manager coming from abroad know more about the players in the Prem than a woman who had served her entire footballing career in England?

Of course she'd have less knowledge. The men's and women's games are kept totally separate. It's like saying a British Rugby League coach, after spending their whole time in League could make an effortless switch over to Union. Also, would a woman who has spent every weekend playing, coaching and managing in a separate environment know more than an avid supporter about individual players?

I don't know whether there's a different focus on coaching in the women's game (maybe Sister of Fu could tell us?), but I doubt she could make it as an instant success in anything above league one due to media intrusion, finances and a step up in professionalism*.

*By professionalism, I mean almost the opposite. A vast number of women's players are amateur, and only play because of their passion for the game. When you're all of a sudden immersed in a world of big-money players throwing hissy-fits and missing training and potential media scandals left, right and centre, I think the culture shock would be overwhelming.

I was sure someone would mention Pep. He started with Barcelona and did his management apprenticeship with Barcelona B side before stepping up to take over the full team. So he also took his time learning the ropes before moving to top job.

Some would argue that she is more qualified than some managers currently in charge of Premiership games, but would/should the fact that she is a woman preclude her from being considered for any managing jobs in The Prem?

Don’t talk like a dick!.....there’s no way a woman be good as a manager in any blokes football. They tried with a woman commentator and that went down like a sack of spuds. Qualifications dont mean jack shit in football, its all about respect and no woman would get the respect by the team in our sport. Bad Idea, Bad Post....please don't do that again to me.

Expanding on Ted Hughes reply......

NO is the answer, especially in the prem where there are players from all over the world, some who come from cultures/religions where they just can not accept the western liberal approach to sex equality, simple as. Ala CARLS (all be it tongue in cheek) philosophy of a womans place.......

I would suspect that maybe a more liberal national team would stand a better chance of this happening, where all the players are comfortable with womens equality. That said i still don't see it happening in my life time.

That's the way is see it anyway.

It's been done, but below Conference level:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/footbal ... 894496.stm

Interestingly enough, the "manageress" in question Donna Powell (not related to Hope Powell as far as I'm aware), felt that the biggest problem she faced was trying to get her instructions across from the touchline, because she said her voice wasn't loud enough to project. That obviously wouldn't be the case with all women, I'm sure we've all had experience of a healthy set of female lungs at one stage or another.

There is nothing about women that would make them inferior managers in an ideal world. Posts claiming that women's football is tactically different to men's do not make a convincing argument - women can watch men's football as much as all of us. If we have views on tactics then so can they. However, it would be the current politics that would stop it happening. Too many players have monstrous egos and wouldn't accept it, if there's was the first club of that stature to try it. If a woman had proved herself, getting a team promoted from League 1 or 2 up to the Championship, or Prem, then that would maybe open the door.

As it is, football must be the most old-fashioned sport when it comes to sexist views. Even female physios get whistled at!

I remember watching that series The Manageress - it was quite a laugh and probably would not be too far away from the truth.

Womens football is a different game. Different tactics, different problems. Not sure she would be tactically up for it.

Before I started this thread I thought long and hard about where it may end up. In the end I decided that people on here were more than capable of having a decent grown up debate on this subject.

The usual suspects, Lytham, CtK, John68, etc nearly proved me right by contributing some really good well thought out points... unfortunately the muppets also showed up and started getting personal with anybody who disagreed with them.

I should have known better.
