If what Dunney says is true, and to be honest I would not know why he would be lieing, then this leaves a really sour taste after all the good things Cook, Hughes and Khaldoon have done.

I didn't have a single thing to criticize about them yet I thought they way they did things, behaved and presented themselves in the transfer window was remarkable... but this really does leave a bad taste now.

Nine years of fantastic wages, standing by him through a few off the field issues and four player of the year awards. And now he's complaining that he was hard done to. He's just got a £550k pay off from City for a start - how long will it take most of us to earn that sort of money? He could easily have been sacked about 7 years ago and I don't think he'd have been doing that well since.

Richard Dunne has accused Manchester City of deceit in an incredible attack on the Barclays Premier League's big spenders.

Dunne, who began the season as captain at Eastlands but was sold to Aston Villa for £5million this week, says he was forced out by the club's executive chairman Garry Cook, who he claims 'doesn't understand football'.

Dunne said: 'All he wants is big-money players. He doesn't understand the core loyalty of the club and where it begins.

'For him I was probably a bit of a nuisance. I found out things that were going on behind my back and I wouldn't speak to him. Every time I came around he probably felt a bit uncomfortable.

'The manager (Mark Hughes) is very quiet, he does his own thing and I spoke with him a few times through the summer about what was going on. He was of the opinion that City needed two players for every position and that was the way the squad was going to work.

'The last time I spoke to him was in Africa after I had found out some other stuff. I said, "Where do I lie in the whole thing?" and he said they were trying to sign players and I would be part of his squad and I could fight for my place.

'He said I was still the captain and even last week he said to me he would rather I stayed but he was told we needed to get money in. I don't think it was his decision.

'They told me they have a certain amount of money they have to recoup each season to make things look better on the books. I could understand if I was being sold for £200m, it might make sense, but it was a bit strange really.

'It just needed people to be honest with me. I was getting phone calls from people saying Garry Cook (pictured) was trying to sell me behind my back, two months after me going to him and saying if he has any problems to come and deal with me. I'm disappointed with people who say one thing and then do the other.

'I'm not going to cry just because the club wanted to sell me - just don't do it behind my back.'

City spent £120m in their summer spree, adding centre backs Joleon Lescott and Kolo Toure to replace Dunne, as well as Carlos Tevez, Emmanuel Adebayor, Roque Santa Cruz and Gareth Barry.

But he has a fucking cheek. He got a MASSIVE payoff we had zero obligation to give.

We stuck by him when he was a pissed up mess and clearly guilty of gross misconduct and ripe for the sack

We kept him as team captain and as a starter last season in the face of poor performances, losing us key points and matches and terrible leadership (esp when we had much better candidates for the armband already on the staff)

We eventually probably did "force" him out (nastily forcing him to a club who finished above us on a paltry 75k per week) BUT only because he is either too thick, stubborn or arrogant to realise that he was hugely not good enough to play in our new team.

We owe Richard Dunne fuck all.

Despite the fact that I have long wanted him sold I did actually feel a pang of sadness when he went.

The truth I have decided to make up and believe is that Dunney was told players are going to be coming in, you can stay and fight, take your chance when someone is injured or suspended, but we cant sign a 24 million pound defender and play him on the bench.

Core truth of the matter is that a side that has aspirations of finishing in the top 4 in the Premier league needs a better quality centre half than Dunne at the heart of the defence, fact (as CARL would rightly point out)

Sentiment gets you absolutely nowhere in top level football.

If Dunne cannot see this then that is his problem, but it is certainly be time for him to shut his big fat gob and stop throwing barbs at a team that paid him handsomely for 9 years, from which he trousered a large pay-off and also stood by him when he was rolling up at the training ground half-cut.

I think the problem is that Dunne was sacked effectively. At this point he is very upset and has opened up about the things that annoyed him during his time. But the fact he was just another employee meant he ignored all these "problems" enough to get on with his job. When other players have been shunted out he hasn't said a thing.
He's just acting like a regular human being.

Now here's the problem for me - he's secured a new job and redundancy payment in the same week. With numbers which are astronomical to regular people but ordinary to him. I wish we all could be so lucky.

No company will look good when the sacked individual talks about the people that fired them. No one EVER leaves on perfect terms. My disappointment with City is the lack of confidentiality clause to his departure. As he was club captain I would expect a restrictive covenant as part of his final payment limiting what is revealed about the workings of the club.

As for needing the money; I think that is true. City have sold Dunne because he was demoted to fourth choice and would cost 20 million in wages over the term of his contract. That is an excessive figure for a reserve team player (not always on the bench). Regardless of how rich we are as a business Cook has to justify the wage bill for each employee. If they are in the starting 11 it's easy. If they are injured it's still easy. Demoted to the bench, a little harder. Demoted to the reserves pretty damn hard.

Dunne is turning 30, was on a contract for 20 million and would work mostly at reserve team level. Limited resale value in January. No resale value next summer.
I personally wanted him to stay but I am just a fan, and I am supposed to be emotional about the club. Cook is doing his job, he has less room to be emotional. But I damn well expect that next time the contracts and severance packages of players are presented they explicitly talk about players media obligations and what is NOT permitted without club approval. If Cook doesn't get this sorted then I will be very annoyed with him. Whistleblowing is fine for breaches of law not because of tantrums or feeling slighted.
