I think Pep was correct to apologize despite SG's behavior last match last season.
Pep was making a different point using the SG slip as an example of that point. He was not having a dig at SG. The media would milk that as an attack on SG even though it was not. It was just a bad example to use. By apologizing he kills the media narrative, which they definitely would have spun in future.
He doesn’t kill the narrative at all mate. Gerrard himself could come out and say he’s okay with it and it was only a joke, and the media would still report it as Pep having a dig and making him the bad guy. That’s the media.
You only have to look at Wednesday night. Kev pushes Arteta when trying to take a quick throw and then after the match they shake hands. No issues. The media have made out like Arteta was dropped with one punch by Kev.
The actual apology was unnecessary.
