I don't think they can protect them. By playing in a competition that is outwith FIFA sanctions then the players and clubs leave themselves to being banned from FIFA sanctioned tournaments which also includes all UEFA and domestic tournaments.
I think it says it all that there is nothing on the club's official Twitter feed about the ESL or even a link to the statement from the club as they must know the fans would be outraged by our involvement in this non-competitive competition. Fans not being in the grounds to voice their outrage is also another factor that has been used to make now the time to come out with this. Using covid as an excuse to need to break away is bad enough but using the health sanctions imposed on all the clubs as a windbreak to getting abuse about being a founder member is deplorable.
UEFA stinks but you don't beat the stink by creating an even bigger stench!!
