European games December 8/9/10

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

From what I understand, it was all clarified last night, but at a point too late to re-start the game (there were talks about it re-starting last night at one point), but reports differ on this, and it may not have been satisfactorily clarified at all. I don't want to cast aspersions on UEFA's moral decency, but it's interesting that the game has been rescheduled to kick off at the time of the pre-existing TV slots, rather than earlier in the day.

My two cents, I think he said: Ala IN negru (that one in black), while pointing out to Webo who was near their manager, at that point. Negru in romanian is black, not negro.
I don't think he did it intentionally because the fella, aside his issues, doesn't have more than 40 words in his vocabulary.

I was going to ask you about this, whether there might have been a language mix-up because of the officials speaking in Romanian. So a storm in a teacup, then, because of something someone overheard in a language they didn't understand, basically?

Then how come this wasn't clarified before the players left the pitch ? There are so many languages in Europe and quite often words in one language sound like other languages. I was on a tram in Manc a while ago and thought I heard some women speaking dutch - turned out after listening carefully , they were scouse with very thick accents. It is quite possible there was misinterpretation - but don't let that get in the way of handbags at five paces in Social Media.

It was hard to do that when Demba Ba was shouting in his face, Webo too and Mbappe couldn't wait to go in to his dressing room to pick up the phone and post something. I am amazed Hamilton didn't left his covid quaratine to get involved also. Mbappe was 70 meters from where it happened, but when the argument started he was in the front row.

The second reason why it wasn't cleared, from my point of view is because the ref can't hold a decent argument and explain clearly. On the full video he is saying at some point NEGRU is not the same as NEGRO, but Ba was shouting so zero chances to clear it up.
We have the same misunderstanding with rroma and romanian, but in a different context. if we can talk about a semi similar example.

I think there is a storm in a teacup, yeah, based on who that ref is. He is not a racist, but he shouldn't be at this level based on his past. This was a thing that the ref, the 4th official, the captains and the managers should solve on the spot, explain clear and carry on, but sadly it went into a media circus and we will hear a long time about this now.

LE: Spot on from Micah, imho.

Demba Ba's point was why did you feel the need to say "that black man", if he was white would you have said "that white man"? I think that's fair. But I also agree with Micah, without the context you cannot confirm one way or another.

PP has said “ I think he said: Ala IN negru (that one in black), while pointing out to Webo who was near their manager, at that point. Negru in romanian is black, not negro”

It’s a shame that we’re jumping on people and screaming in their face without actually clarifying what they were referring to as black imo.

Hmm was PP on the sideline? The coach was wearing a big green/grey (all be it dark) jacket. Certainly not black.

No absolutely not. But neither where you. Nothing gives us the right to assume. We can’t just jump on someone without knowing the context.

PP has used logic and reason based on his culture. You’ve just used assumption based on the media.

No, but he speaks Romanian, the language the comment was made in. Which is something that - as far as I understand - none of the people who overheard the comment and took offence to it do.

The very fact that It was a protest against racism by UEFA employees/representatives, on the pitch, for the whole world to see is the very reason there's no way they'll dock points.
UEFA would be seen as condoning racism.

UEFA is a very "Do as we say, not as we do" organization. If it was a club-on-club accusation, then they wouldn't dock points, I agree. But I don't see them acting that way when it's their own representatives/reputation/money involved. There'll be some kind of "proper channels" excuse, especially as it seems increasingly likely that this all stemmed from a linguistic misunderstanding.

I don't think they have any option.
UEFA have made their anti racism stance the main part of their image as a caring responsible organisation. To be seen to be punishing anyone for making a stand against racism will give the media a field day.
I imagine the media believe (as I do), that UEFA's anti racism stance is much more to do with their image than any convictions they may hold on the matter.

For me, listening to the dialogue, It was close to this:
4th official: Sebi?
Official: Yes?
4th official: You need to send him off.
Official: Who?
4th official: Him IN black (NEGRU) ... black.

He said two times NEGRU, but first time he used ÎN, means IN. I think Webo heard only NEGRU, the second time he said it.
In romanian, negru is black. Black like the color and we use it to describe anything related to the color. For the sake of the argument, ”cioara” is the bad word, the N word, or even at times, gypsy.
Basically in this case, the second NEGRU might refere to Black Person, but not in a bad way. It's like in a situation you are robbed and you need to describe who was it and you will say: two white guys and a black guy.

I think he should had been careful with the choice of words, but racism? No way.

But there is something more, according to some sources here, who recognised the voice, said the assistant said it, not the Fourth official. If that is true, it will be quite fun to see where this will go.

For us non-Romanian speakers, what are "Him in black" and "Him, the black one" in Romanian, to see how similar/different the two phrases he might have said are?

Yeah, it's a really tricky situation caused by his poor choice of words.
For me is more stupidity than racism.
