We were seen as a bit of a joke until they found out how serious the club were and how much ability the people they brought in had. I suspect next season will be the one where the vitriol towards the geordies increases. They are improving noticeably.
I am actually enjoying seeing another of the old sly sports four getting their nose shoved out of the trough.

If I am not mistaken, the saudi nation is behind BEIN? From my knowledge, our club does not have any media connection, so I think Newcastle will get it better than us.
I don't mind them, even if they will become a title threat. It means more problems for the scouse/red shite.

City were next. A new ownership model of 'country' ownership willing to invest. They were to late when they tried to close the door to City. Big problem, Chelsea and City now blocking one of Liv, MU, Arsenal or Spurs from the trough.

beIN is a spin-off of Al Jazeera, so Qatari. There's no love lost between them and the Saudis.

Before Abramovich took over at Chelsea, the last time Spurs got into Europe through their league position was the 1982/83 season. They weren't even part of the equation until the 'Big 6' was invented.

And there is an established hierarchy now in the PL of six 'big clubs'. So to be challenging that with Howe only having been there just over a year is a very decent effort. I doubt they will keep up top 4 in the remainder of the season but next season, if they have a good window in the summer, they could easily be a proper threat to the top 6, meaning an established big club could even miss out on the Europa League!
I think like other posters have commented, they are the moment not getting much grief. Ratboy last year tried to introduce the line of sportswashing but it didn't gain much traction. Whether this was because of the impending World Cup I don't know. Could have been. And with the rags and dippers both either up for sale or out for new investment and with the likelihood this may come from the Middle East, I suspect this line of denigration may not be too vociferous. Very much the opposite of what we have had to endure.
I remember when we were first took over and immediately showed our intent with the signing of Robinho, the media and rags in particular were very dismissive. Saying it won't last. That we are just a plaything for a bored Arab and they will disappear as quickly as they appeared. When it became apparent a couple of years later following the FA Cup win that actually, in fact, our owners weren't going to disappear any time soon and were here for the long haul, their narrative changed.
It's unfair they moaned. It's not a level playing field. And so the genesis of FFP was initiated. It was too late. We had unceremoniously gatecrashed the party. We had upset the trough the old Sky4 had been feeding at unimpeded for years. So the hate truly began in earnest. And so far we have simply brushed it off. And dominated the domestic game. So they bleated on about the lack of success in Europe. And when we win that they will have nothing. Except the sting of copious amounts of bitter tears.
Will Newcastle follow a similar path? I guess time will tell. I suspect our journey has paved the way for others to have it slightly easier.
But good luck to them. Any side that displaces the rags or dippers or Chelsea from their perch has my backing
