Gary Cook was asked this questions at the fans forum last season and said that we won't buy it as it's financilly better to rent. Said their are not any plans in the future for City to buy the ground.

Not owning City of Manchester could work in our long-term interest. Should the ultimate plans of the Sheik for Manchester City be successful, we will need a larger capacity stadium. According to the guide on the tour, it would be very difficult to expand the seating capacity at COMS given the structural design. As such, we could plan something more along the lines of the Maracana! (Only in sky blue!)

Im sure i read somewhere that there was going to be a deal where Sheik and his team promise to develop land in and around Eastlands and we get the stadium land etc for mates rates.

You scratch our back,we'll scratch yours kind of thing.

Plus i dont think the council are your usual landlord,i cant see the owners having to tap up the council for months to get a new fridge in the changing room or have o send 10 letters to get a leak sorted.

there was an agreed deal as part of the rent agreement where the longer we rented the better the price got to buy the thing

They don't own it but they largely paid for it and both Council and the Club are bound by the terms of the grant. Basically if the Council sold it then the cost of the initial building for the Commonwealth Games would have to be repaid, about £100m?
It's only the freehold we don't own anyway, we have leasehold ownership now - long leases are effectively classed as ownership.

Not sure why a local authority would wait on a national election. Question remains do they want a big single lump or an income for life which benefits the people of Manchester. Afetr 2002 they have an obligation to protect the legacy of the area so will prolly never want to give it up entirely.
MCC had an option to take a 5% stake in the club under the terms of the lease for £5m quid.
That's expired now so the dozey effers missed a trick.
Maybe they will consider it, but for now we are 7 years into a 250 year lease which means on our books we have an asset of 100mill plus.
When the UEFA rules change, investment in infrastructure will not be scrutinised like other spending, so if anything that will be the time to consider an approach.
