I hate them changing the home fixtures. Not arsed about the away ones.

Not too bad, they usually ruin it far more than that, so January will probably be garbage.

It was a genuine question! I mean, from the beginning of time(the length im speaking english, albeit badly) there have been games on New Years day, i was just keen to know when you had started as anyone who follows football would know the answer to your question.

You can stun him further by recalling that they actually used to play on Xmas day as well. Then again, its probably not worth the effort.

Couldve done with the home game on the 28th being shifted to evening or next day as Im at a christening, and given Im one of the godparents it isn't one I can duck out of.

I'm not sure why he's shocked by it. Over here the NBA has games on Christmas and college (American) football has games on Christmas Eve, New Years Eve and New Years Day.

before floodlights, there were very few games that kicked late
too dark to play later on wasn't it

The question of the New Year’s Day traditional fixture is quite interesting so I did a quick look on Google. I only spent 15 minutes on it and there was no obvious site with a full history, so this is hardly authoritative, but I did spot a couple of interesting things.
While I can’t find any reference to games on New Year’s Day in the first Football League season of 1888-9, there was certainly one on Wednesday 1st January 1890 in Bolton, where goal nets were used for the first time.
One thing that did surprise me was that New Year’s Day has only been a bank holiday in England and Wales since 1974. Now I would have been 14 at that time but I do not remember it at all - I can't believe my Dad didn't mention it! In Scotland it has been a bank holiday since 1871. So clearly English New Year's Day fixtures predate a formal bank holiday by a very long way.
If anyone knows more about how this fixture became such a tradition I would be interested to learn.
