Manchester The City Years

Postby gary james » Mon Jul 22, 2013 12:35 pm

When Manchester The City Years (the full history of MCFC) first came out last September I didn't post a piece on the book on here, because I'm aware that too many plugs can be irritating to say the least, but now that the book's nearing the end of its print run I've asked for and been given permission to post a few details about the book to make sure Mancityfans.net regulars don't miss out.

The book's down to its last couple of hundred copies and is likely to sell out before Christmas so I want to give a quick heads up to anyone who isn't aware of its existence. Anyone outside the UK can get hold of it via: http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/Manches ... 0955812774

The hardback edition (there won't be a paperback version) of my full history of MCFC - Manchester The City Years (covering City from the 1850s and the steps prior to the club's birth through to the QPR game and subsequent celebrations in 2012) - is now down to its last couple of hundred copies and these are likely to sell out soon. The book contains 500,000 words and hundreds of colour photos on 608 pages.

MCFC have some at their City Stores and branches of Waterstones should have a supply - if you don't see it ask and any Waterstones branch will be able to get it in quickly. The National Football Museum have a small supply as well.

WHSmiths won't stock the book as it's often stolen when they have it! Actually I was told by someone it was the most stolen book in one particular Manchester bookshop - best review I've ever had!

If you buy over the internet then Amazon have copies as do most other online retailers such as Waterstones. If you're outside of the UK the easiest/cheapest way of getting the book is via the Book Depository (see above link). They tend to have it discounted and also have it post free around the world, so if you're in USA, Australia etc. you should get it for less than the UK cover price of £25 (they must lose money on postage because it costs a lot to post due to its weight).

For more information on the book, sample pages etc. have a look at my facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GaryJames4#!/m ... 815&type=3

Also, some text only sections are available for Kindle at less than £2 each. If you want to sample some text to see what the book's like then you can get a free sample or buy these 30,000+ word sections here (the opening chapters): http://www.amazon.co.uk/Manchester-The- ... city+years or here (The story of 2009-12): http://www.amazon.co.uk/Manchester-The- ... city+years

If you can't afford to buy any of my books or simply don't want to spend that sort of money on a hardback book then please pop into your local library and borrow any of my back catalogue. Libraries can and will order books in from others around the country. Use the libraries - they're free (though may not be for ever!).

Finally, thanks to everyone on here who has helped over the years. There have been some great comments from people like Chinners about my writing in years gone by, and I've always been grateful for the support of everyone who has commented, reviewed and of course read my books. Writing about City for these last 25 years has been tough at times and there have been many despairing moments (with the research & books and with watching City of course!), so thanks to all those who have encouraged me to keep going with my research and writing at times by their comments and actions. I'm now in the middle of a long phase of detailed research for another project which is likely to mean I won't publish a book for several years (though I have said this before).

Thanks to everyone who has helped and those that continue to help along the way. It's always appreciated.

Thanks,

Gary

Just purchased this and it arrived this morning. Looks a cracking read and particularly appreciated the reproduction of the Peter Doherty Churchman's Cigarettes card!

Mine's just turned up too, looks as if I'll be out of circulation for a while.

That's one book I would drop everything for if I could find a publisher interested. The aim was to do a trilogy and we'd sketched out the plot for the other 2 but no publisher wanted to do them. Maybe one day.

There's actually a kindle version of "Atkinson For England" (although the publishers still owe me royalties) which can be bought from amazon via my current publisher's link: http://www.manchesterfootball.org/ebooks.php along with some of my other books and kindle editions. I did enjoy writing that book and who knows maybe when I get a break from my current research I'll let my imagination wander a little. In the sequel Atkinson was to be in charge of a very small team that would be facing MUFC in the CL (lots more than that of course, but you can guess how my mind was working!).
