Major League Soccer

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

Really??? With all these wonderful consumer options available on international sports feeds???

Hmm, don't expect tons of skill or crisp play over here, but the MLS has a certain unincorporated
'why not' feeling to it. Imagine a bunch of Second Division castoffs and Internationals, just playing because
they love the game. And imagine the large amount of expats and local US fans turned off by greed and the violence
of the NFLor the boring nature of baseball.

It really is just a growing sport, but has a lot of promise.....

I support the Chicago Fire, but only because I grew up. One of my mates his brother is (though I believe soon-to-be was) the keeper coach for them, so I watched a few games this year. The quality is not so great, but still some good fun.

I love the Seattle Sounders owner, Drew Carey, who hosted the US version of "Whose line is it anyway?"

I can't wait for the Portland-Seattle Derby!! You want to talk about two towns who live to hate each other. It will be like the UO/UW rivalry times a thousand. Portland, always the town in the shadow of Sheattle; can't wait till they come down to PGE Park.

TBH, i've never watched a full MLS game cause I think its a bit shite..
but whatever, its the closest thing we have here.
I'll support my local team and the local players, hopefully they sign Ben Olsen... who is from my hometown.. plays for DC U***d now.. but was playing over in Enland a few years back.

i understand the toronto - columbus derby was a pretty good un this year. and chicago took a few to toronto too. Portland and vancouver can only add to the league - i imagine both will get great crowds and have top footballing pedigree.

reagrding great owners - Robb Heinemann of KC was pictured with his team's "ultras" holding a flare whilst climbing a fence, and regularly posts on the fan's forum - can't imagine garry cook doing either!!

@maseCTID - red bull bought NY/NJ and are currently trying to fuck them just like they fucked salzburg - that's why good money is on new york getting a second team in the next expansion draft (and they'll actually be in NYC this time). (by the way - fans of salzburg formed an afc wimbledon style club and are already climbing the leagues - good on em.)

south park
sarah silverman
larry sanders
everybody loves raymond

'Comedy' does not neccessarily equate to 'irony'.

It was all going so well until that. I was even nodding when you mentioned Sarah Silverman and was thinking about adding 30 Rock to the list. Then you go and mention Everybody Loves Raymond. There has to be irony somehwere there?
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

yup - the irony was spotted. i was gonna put curb your enthusiasm but thought it'd be more ironic to put that. of course the british are very proud to be the finest purveyors of sarcasm....

anyway - should be a good final tonight. good article about MLS in the observer today.

Anyone staying up to watch this?

saw the highlights of the game and it wasn't exactly a great game from what was shown. RSL won on pens and became the champions, which is great for them as they have lost more then they have won this season!! How stupid is that?

Must admit i thought it was a total joke before but i've been watching some games and it's quite fun.

Decided to adopt a team and i'm thinking Kansas City Wizards. Mainly coz i like the underdog, they play in blue and their ground is bizarre.

anyone else taken any interest in it?

yeah don't that guy who go out with one of the spice girls play for a team over there? David Shwimmer or something?? I definetly know its David something!

I'll also be keeping a watchful eye on Philadelphia Union as my girlfriend is from Philly and we share sports teams.

[Temporary Switch to Off-Topic]

As for quality American comedies, try these too:

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Arrested Development

Curb Your Enthusiasm is brilliant, as was Seinfeld. There's been loads of good comedy shows on American TV in the last 20 years, much more than here in Britain in my opinion (although I like the late 70s/ early-mid 80s stuff best here; Not the Nine O'Clock News, The Comic Strip Presents..., The Young Ones, Blackadder).

Can't stand Sunny in Philadelphia, although Arrested Development is my favourite American show of all time. Second fave is Boston Legal.

Hmm... That's interesting. IASIP is my favorite show. The only shows I watch are that and Curb Your Enthusiasm. In fact, those are a few of the only shows I've watched since Seinfeld was done. A few others, mostly HBO ones - Flight of the Conchords, Eastbound and Down, etc.

Never watched AD, but was always told it was great and I was missing out. Thought it was in the same vein as "Sunny" as everyone I know who watched AD loves Sunny. Admittedly Sunny has become more "over the top" and the characters have become more "defined" and less complex, but I still think its funny 95% of the time.
