THE 130th ANNIVERSARY OF MANCHESTER CITY F.C.13TH NOVEMBER 1880
MACCLESFIELD BAPTIST CHURCH 2-1 ST MARKS (WEST GORTON)
This coming Saturday is the 130th ANIVERSARY of the very first recorded game played by St Marks (West Gorton). Though recent research suggests that our heritage may go back even further to 1875 and possibly as early as the 1860s. This game is at present accepted as our BIRTH AS A FOOTBALL CLUB.
Our great club was formed from the gutters of West Gorton in order to help lift a community out of the detritus of life, poverty and deprivation that surrounded them. We were formed because of the social conscience of a few good people whose initial determination and efforts started St Marks on a great journey, that has eventually led to to be where we are now.
Without them and those who followed them in those early years, Manchester City Football Club would not exist today.
THANK YOUANNA CONNELL, Rev ARTHUR CONNELL, WILLIAM BEASTOW, THOMAS GOODBEHERE, (and later); WALTER KITCHEN, EDWARD CHEW, LAWRENCE FURNISS, JOSHUA PARLBY, KENNETH McKENZIE and many many others.
