It's cricket season!!! So with cricket 4 or 5 days a week and the world cup almost every day soon there will be no time to do anything.

It does my head in that we're not there, but I'll be rooting for Argentina again. I know Maradonna's a lunatic, but they've always been my second international team and its nice to have someone to support.

Saying you hate it but you're going to watch 90% of it is a bit mad, no? There's little chance you'd get me to watch the "vast majority" of neighbours if there was a marathon of it on. I fucking hate that show.

I love it as well. Ive got my nederlands top and my big red kazoo trumpet thing my kids bought me - i couldn't even be mad at them for that tho i hate it -- and it will be a fun time for us. Me and the 4 year old will watch and root on the oranje and ive got soft spots for chile and nigeria and uruguay this WC cuz i think one of the three of them could get to the semis.

In fact, i have a semi thinking about the WC.

I think i am the definition of why Andy hates it. Gloryhunter. American. Doesn't know the game. Started following the game due to seeing international footy and didn't grow up playing it. Etc etc. Also i don't really support my national side but my families eurotrash roots from holland and italia instead. He should have just PMd me and told me to fucl off and saved us all this thread and his negative ranting.

P.S. OD ill be rooting for The republic and thinking of you. Hope they do well. I think st ledger is a great player and cant wait to see him vs the worlds best on this stage. He's a really handy little player.

It's a great showcase for the different footballing styles (e.g. Italy's patience, Brazil's fluidity and incisiveness, England's tempo and physicality). It's also the pinnacle of the career of any serious pro. It gives some players a once-in-a-lifetime chance to shine on a world stage, and a country like Senegal the chance to revel in dumping out an old colonial powerhouse like France. I like it. It doesn't really bear comparison with watching City as it's a completely different experience, and it's a million miles away from watching Rochdale in teh Johnstone's Paint Trophy on a wet Tuesday in November.

P.S. I own the Spain 2002 World Cup shirt!

Well, you are right of course but the general point stands. And like I said, I love football as a game and will be watching the vast majority of the games. It's just all the shit surrounding the competition that does my head in.

And IF Finland would ever make it to major competition, I think the feeling would be somewhat bitter sweet. All of the sudden there'd be 5 odd million people "supporting" our national side. I remember vividly watching Finland against Albania in march in about -25 degrees with roughly thousand other people in early-80's and driving 150 kilometers back home, last 100km with no heating. I've been through thin and thinner following them whereas these cunts would enjoy the "fruits".

Of course he's right. If Finland made the World Cup then you'd be cheering them on like no other.

The World Cup is the biggest occasion in Football and it get non-Football Fans excited. This is where the problem lies for you. The exclusivity is gone and it's no longer an individual thing when every person ever is talking about Football.

I will be doing my best to ignore it as it as an unwarranted interference with the cricket season and Wimbledon, pretty difficult to ignore it mind you with all the peasants driving around their white vans and cars with ridiculous little flags, or even more ridiculous big flags, on them...

I like the world cup and all the 'fans' bollox ... it offers a different side to the football and crowds I usually see. Obviously ain't a patch on watching City but it's not far off but for different reasons

Should it even have "World" in the title when it has got non-American teams playing in it?

Me too and not only because Italia should go with a very weak squad this year! I'd be interested at English performances if AJ would be in the squad ... no AJ? Don't matter who or how will win this time, World Cup is usually so boring also for me!
From Torino, Italia to Manchester, Lancashire this City is always our City!

anyone else think it's disgraceful when 2nd generation americans support other national teams while the US are still in the tournament?
i understand that america is a young country and folks are proud of where their families came from, but it perpetuates the perception of the US as a joke of a footballing nation.
it makes me sad to think that, should england get knocked out before the US, i would be a bigger US fan than many americans.

I love tournament football - it's what got me interested when I was a nipper since I didn't follow a local team back then - I can remember certain parts of my life in relation to certain tournaments too.

If stating an opinion ruins a thread then the thread must be pretty weak. But this thread contains the ultimate proof that Dr Samuel Johnson was right on the mark...

I'm with NQDP here. eveybody suddenly becomes an expert. Rooney et al are still rag fuckers and although I want England to win, it won't break my heart when they fuck it up.
Bonus football to keep us going til the proper stuff starts again.
Still it wll be nice to be rooting for Sweep, Barry and Joe.
City and sniffing knickers.

I don't 'hate' it and will watch most of it but I'd rather watch City!. It beats fucking wimbledon for two sour weeks. I have to agree though with NQDP that it does get on my tits folk who don't watch football any other time getting a giddy and thinking they are experts for the world cup. The neighbours have more flags on their house than I care to count and his wife is so so excited about the world cup yet has no fucking clue who is in the group bar the usa.
I haven't a fecking clue what I'm doing! Gillie come back man I want my sig back. As the Photobucket thingy gone?

An opinion that you like to state again and again and again at any given opportunity? You've ruined the last two St George's Day threads with your antagonism and pseudo-intellectual views. I had hoped that the latest incarnation of your Politics Forum would keep you quiet with all this rubbish - but it apparently failed within months.

Have you made any friends in Denby Dale yet? So tolerant of other peoples views...
