Cups For Cock Ups

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

Cups For Cock Ups

Postby john68 » Thu Apr 20, 2017 4:30 pm

Inspired by Hazy's comment about Charlton's sacking of Curbishly "Taken them as far as he could" and Patrick Blue's comment that "It couldn't be topped," I got thinking about some of the almost suicidal decisions that "dear old City" have made over the years.

Suggestions;
Allowing the rags to use Maine Rd after WW2, giving them access to our huge following and the finances to fund their post war rise.
Selecting Alan Ball as the Messiah to start the rebuild after Swales.
Bringing Peter Swales into the club as a peace maker between two rival City factions, that saw us slowly, very slowly bleed to death over the next 10 years.
And not to mention some of the supposed superstars that we chucked tons of cash at for no good reason.
The Steve Daley affair.
Finding out that the fire was no better than the frying pan, from whence we jumped, as Frank Sinatra's billions had been frozen by the Thai government and we were back in the shite again.

Sorry Patrick Blue Mate but your challenge that Charlton couldn't be topped can be destroyed by some of the masochistic shite that City have done.

Oh, the memories, heart ache, stress, worry and the self inflicted misery that City have put us through over the years.....But we survived....I think.

HAVE FUN!!!!!!
I KNOW THAT YOU BELIEVE THAT YOU UNDERSTOOD WHAT YOU THINK I WROTE, BUT I AM NOT SURE YOU REALISE THAT WHAT YOU READ IS NOT WHAT I MEANT

All of those could have worked out for the best, apart from the Alan Ball thing.

I think we all knew that was a cock up from the outset.

I always liked Mel Machin and the way he was building (albeit having to) a new side from the youngsters.

I know we were near the bottom of the table at the time, but I always thought his sacking was premature, when cooler heads should have possibly prevailed.

Big Mal ripping apart Tony Book's team in 1978/1979

Out: Hartford, Tueart, Watson, Barnes, Royle, Kidd, Doyle, Owen, Donachie, Deyna (A bit later)
In: Stepanovic, Caton, Daley, Robinson

Some of his inclusions were reasonable, but overall a disastrous loss.

I'd argue against Frank being a cockup, him buying the club triggered the sequence of events that led to sheiky taking over

Frank Sinatra buying the club was fricking awesome!

It was those crystals he put in the ground that changed our fortunes.

Dead right frank started the whole dream.

Speaking of cock ups... Garry had quite a few in his time here.
Remember how the rags laughed when he said "united" instead of city at a supporters event?

Remember how they stopped fucking laughing when he sold us to Sheikh Mansour?

Garry you legend

Amen to that BJ.

The team, at that stage, was just starting to need rebuilding but the process could have been engineered more gradually in stages. Big Mal came in like a veritable volcano and seemed intent upon ripping everything to shreds overnight and we got rid of a lot of quality and experience all at one go.

As they say, the rest is history and it felt heartbreaking to witness our consequent implosion which set the scene for an entire decade in the eighties.

Well John Bond came in, replaced the experience we'd lost and took us to the FA cup final.

Players like Tommy Caton, Steve Mackenzie and Dave Bennett could and would have been phenomenal.

As you say it's all history now.

Scary thing is that I'm sure you actually believe in those crystals.

Anywayzz, happy birthday Darren.
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

Shame he didn't put them in Maine Road a few years earlier, and get rid of that gypsy curse!
