VAR (Video Assistant Referee)

David Villa was sent off during New York City FC's 3-1 Desert Diamond Cup loss to Houston Dynamo on Saturday night thanks to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system.

The system has been introduced in the MLS preseason as a way to help advise the on-field referee on "game-changing" decisions including goals, penalty shouts, direct red card incidents and mistaken identity.

In Villa's case on Saturday, cameras picked up the striker slapping the face of Houston Dynamo defender A.J. DeLaGarza with his hand during a tussle in the 18-yard box.

Initially Villa was handed a yellow card, but upon further review Villa was shown his marching orders.

MLS commissioner Don Garber has previously said that if the system proves to be a success, it will be implemented during the second half of the 2017 regular season.

Too American?

All depends on how it's policed.

As it goes I don't have much confidence it will be used correctly. I think there will be instances of certain players getting away with offences that others are punished for. Much the same way matches are referred at present.

It will be used as a stick to implement decisions that the authorities would like to be made

This is a great example of how it should be used. I am all.for it.

Used correctly it will be brilliant for the game. But let's assume that the body that provides the match officials will also be the body that controls the decisions that the VAR will be used on.

Honestly, do people have confidence in the system of officiating at the moment? We had a rag fan officiating us again yesterday, not long after he put in one of the more shoddy performances seen by an official this season.

The beauty is though NB, the video evidence will be available post match for scrutiny so the 4th official won't be able to say "I never saw it".... The camera never lies.

Has to be a win win situation?

Assuming it will be 4th official that reviews it that is

I'm all for it, I would have some reservations though in how it's applied, reason being the FA can review footage of Fabregas slapping Fernandinho in the face but fail to act, I wouldn't necessarily trust them to use this properly and consistently.

Rojo's two challenges that he got yellow cards for being another. Bogbrush and his constant elbows. There are numerous examples of how the current legislators could have used video evidence but have failed to do so.

I hope it comes in, I really do. But not under the jurisdiction of the mob who run football at present

im just curious what the delay is with the in-game reviews. how long was it between Villa's yellow and when he got the red?
is it really quick? or is it a couple of minutes?

They can be put down to judgement calls for the 4th official, i.e., he can judge that there was enough doubt not to overrule the ref in those instances but not when similar instances occurred for us (not that they do). It'd still be bent they'd just find a way of making it work for the scum and the dippers.

All for it but cautious it will be used correctly. The issue for me is that it will be Sky or BTs coverage which will be used and they've started getting into the habit of ignoring/not replaying incidents dependant if they play in Rags, or not.

Remember the one where Pogba dived and the commentators didn't even comment on it, it just went quiet for 30 seconds until another incident happened.

Apparently it was a really really soft red even for a freindly

Not the greatest advert for using video tech. Twats.

It'll never happen here. That'll mean the FA, PL, Sky and the rest of the red shite, big four loving establishment losing control of the results.
They resisted goal line technology until it got to the point where they had no option, several years after their old mates the rags managed not to concede against spuds, although the ball was three feet over the line when it was "saved".

In the words of the great Pink Floyd "the tides turning"

FIFA are hopefully trialling it soon at higher levels after what is thought have successful trials at youth internationals last year....

We can hope can't we?

Exactly.

Do people Really think the outcome would be the same if there are similar incidents in rags v Bournemouth with Fellaini fouling and wba v City games with Fernandinho fouling ?

Has overturned two decisions in the France v Spain game. One for a goal awarded and one for a goal not being awarded. Correct decisions reached on both occasions

Excellent.

It's being introduced from the fa cup 3rd round next season.

Huge step forward. For the fans. Huge step backwards for the money men
