Scoring goals

Strike conversion seems to have declined under friend Pellegrini. I haven't checked the stats but it seems to me we need a lot more chances to score these days, which is one of the things that affectd our league form. A number of games should have been well put away before we cocked it up to draw or lose. You can look at individuals, but is it some sort of failure in the training system?

Aguero - lots of chances missed, to me more then he used to. Masked by his good total, should be twice as many.
Bony - seemed OK at Swansea, nuff said about now
Navas - used to be pretty bad, now beyond appalling
Yaya - lot worse, maybe old age
Silva - bad to worse
Ferdys - neither ever much to write home about, dont score when you expect, score when you dont expect
Central defenders - used to knock in a few, now rare as hens teeth
Sterling - used to knock in a few, can charitably say the last half of the season was disrupted by injury

I'm hoping Mr Guardiola will be expecting much more ruthlessness

Navas - 2 seasons and 76 shots in the league without scoring.

That highlighted bit may well be a backpage headline tomorrow as you know that's how the gutter snipes get their sources by trawling sites like this.

I see, so no one agrees. We dont have any increasing problems scoring goals.

Navas scored once against Tottingham.

We need a new striker. No doubt about that.

fwiw i agree w u. ive been moaning about aguero's wastefulness for months. as a team our efficiency has been fucking attrocious. but of course some helpful blues will quote stats and tell us everything is peachy, in spite of what we saw week in and week out on the pitch...

All's not peachy but you're directing your criticism in the wrong area. Aguero's conversion rate is on par with what it always was. Perhaps try looking elsewhere to see where we're falling short.

Now if you were to specifically mention Aguero in regards his CL performances this season then I'd agree.

I agree with you totally. You only have to go back to our last game against Swansea to see that. Two points dropped when we should have been out of sight in the first twenty minutes.
Plenty more games like that throughout the season.

I agree but I don't think our lack of sharpness is isolated to just goal scoring. Had we been more solid in defence we'd have probably scored more, as we we'd often hammer an opponent for a while and then trip ourselves up, let a goal in, and then never recover.

Did we score any direct from free kicks this season?

Going back to John's original post and the bit about defenders not chipping in, this is an area I've been disappointed with Mangala, having seen how good he was at set pieces at Porto I was hoping for more of the same, the only thing I can remember him doing from a set piece is pollaxing Etoo.

piss taking aside we've had a shit conversion rate for about 5 years
there are at least 10 games in that period when we should have bagged double figures but probably only ended up with 3 or 4. under pep i fully expect us to record the premier league's first 10(+) score.

We have not been anywhere near as attacking this season. The quality of chances has been lowered. Negative team selections.

I agree. Long gone are the days of signing "we score when we want".

Just reading KB's review of the season and apparently Ottamendi scored 8 goals for Valencia last year. Not even close for us. It's the lack of goals from the defence and midfield which has cost us. Hope this gets rectified
