Having said that - he was a model professional, Joe seemed to really like training with him, he was homegrown, and was never scored on in his 4 years at City

He was doing his job. And he did a very good job. That's why he kept it for years and years.

Why does someone get all this hate for ending up in a great job and just doing what was asked of him?? And if someone has money in the bank, why be bitter at them for retiring? Maybe he has the hunger and ambition to try something other than what he's done for most of his life. Nothing wrong with that.

I'd argue that a big part of why he's been employed as a 3rd string keeper for so long is because of his professionalism. He puts his ego to the side, doesn't whisper to the media about wanting to play more/angling for a move, and was a good teammate by all accounts.

Nothing wrong with being content with where you are, and not everyone wants to be (or can be) the best of the best. He's still better than 99.9% of all keepers in the world and got paid very well to play football for 20 years.

Someone has to be 3rd string after all. A youth player would be largely wasted since they should be playing somewhere. So why not have someone like Wright in there?

Agree with that. We also don't know his family situation, maybe he wants to spend more time with them and that's his life priority. Money is not everything and it's not as if he's on skid row

Do you tell your local pub owner that he has no hunger or ambition for not franchising out and trying to become as big as Wetherspoons? Would you slag off your co-workers, friends, or family for having no ambition because they decided to retire early?

Seems to me he's been a model pro, and no doubt has mucked in with the coaching for Joe and Willy.

No issue for me about his ambition, he did the job asked of him with no complaints, and I expect we will probably find in due course he's used the time to do his coaching badges ready to move onwards and upwards.

He wasn't a top level keeper when he joined, why would have have wanted to play at Accrington when he could be involved in a squad fighting for European football and a title winning squad - something he couldn't do as a first choice player in his career. He's contributed, and I for one wish him all the best

It's an interesting one, him and Taylor get a lot of stick over it but I find it fascinating.

As far as I remember he was going to retire until he got the call from city. He is very much needed for training drills etc so it's an important role, also need to be trust worthy and semi decent on the off chance you are needed.

I know he gets 7/8k but must be difficult been one of the lads when they all earn 100k a week etc, I doubt he is set up for life so can't be going off splashing it like the rest of them.

On a side note Irish keeper second choice at Ipswich had played a tonne of games was pushing for first choice, saved a pen in carling cup and next day quit football aged 21 to come home and be a police man....just had no love for it, similar story to these guys, he would be goin to euros with Ireland if he hadn't of quit at this stage, Shane supple google him interesting story.

Was interesting to read up on the guy and shows being a pro footballer isnt for everyone.

I think it's also helpful to add that Wright was once considered a good keeper. Played over 300 games for Ipswich and was bought for 6 million by Wenger as a future replacement for Seaman. Then moved to Everton to try and get more game time. That didn't work out obviously, but it's not like he never tried

I think third choice keeper is a specialist role (assuming you're not a youngster providing nominal cover) - you have to be realistic enough about your own chances playing-wise and very probably smart enough to be picking up contacts/qualifications/on the job experience for a possible non-playing football role in the near future. I wouldn't be surprised if he stayed on in another capacity.
