Javier Mascherano has been sentenced to a year in prison after the Barcelona man was found guilty of tax evasion, according to Spanish reports.
Spanish newspaper El Mundo report Mascherano was sentenced after appearing in court on Thursday, where the former Liverpool and West Ham man was also hit with a €815,000 (£629,000) fine.
The Argentina international admitted defrauding the treasury of €1.5m euros in 2011 and 2012.
The 31-year-old is likely to avoid serving the sentence and will instead have to pay an additional fine.
“I’m a sporting professional, I don’t have a great understanding of taxes and law,” Mascherano said on Twitter.
“To deal with what are for me technical and complicated matters, I have to rely on other people.
“Throughout all my career I have been an honest person, responsible and respectful of my team-mates and the clubs that I have played for and the countries I have lived in.”
In November the father of fellow Barcelona star Neymar admitted his son was “very insecure and uneasy” about staying in Spain after a number of investigations into their tax situation.
