He is a really important part of the squad and his influence in the Academy cannot be underestimated. Those lads who follow the EDS will have a better knowledge of this than I do and the likes of Twosips and Doug who seem to be quite well known in the Academy may be able to substantiate this. Just like the dippers in their rat infested Melwood shithole looked up to starfish and Carra for years and the young, dirty rags would have rimmed any of the class of '92, so our lads will look to the likes of Yaya and Kun and Kompany and Silva as heroes.
I don't doubt for a second he is not as influential on the field, especially against a younger, fitter midfield opposition, as he was a couple of years ago, but he still has a massive part to play. How much of a role he has is largely down to the management team and the form of the likes of Delph and the Ferns. What price another Wembley goal?
Good post Notts. Pretty much what I would like to see. I think he is worth more staying with us if he is willing to start to take a back seat more on the field. We wouldn't get back the same in monetary value by selling him.
I don't know if he is totally into the concept of ending his career here in a mentoring role. But it would be great if a legend like him could be kept at the club. But, physically, he is rapidly losing effectiveness and should not be guaranteed his place.
As long as his influence off the field remains positive, I would keep him.
Start to rely more on our other players, on the park. Make them step up to the mark and take responsibility. Yaya was great, but I fear he is just not capable of reaching the heights consistently anymore.
