looking forward to the game vs portugal tonight (live on bt sports in the uk)
shame that berahino has just pulled out of the tournament, his record at this level is fantastic.
also hearing stones is out of tonight's game with a head injury and he'll be a big miss.

Not quite related but last night (maybe? I'm a bit lost with the days as I'm on holiday and the Greek red wine is cheap) I saw highlights of that tournament (U20 WC?) where Lopes is playing.

He was involved with basically every one of Portugal's chances in one way or another..but they just couldn't find the back of the net.

Lopes himself missed two "one-on-ones", but neither of them was a clear breakthrough. Instead for the first he made a brilliant run behind the defence to meet a cross from behind but headed wide (when anywhere on target would've probably been a goal) and the other one was also a smart run behind the lines and though he didn't have much time, I think he hurried his shot a bit and hit the keepers feet.
And actually there was one moment where he hit the post too.

They went to penalties and lost. I think three Portuguese shot either wide or over. Lopes didn't shoot (or they didn't show it).

The rest of Europe keeps showing England, but the penny is stuck in the FA's back pocket and refuses to drop

I would say Southgate is a universe better than Pearce.

Imo, there was absolutely no difference between the quality of Southgate & the Portuguese coach. Both were trying to play intelligent, passing football. The difference was Portugal's players are all a bit better than their opposite number n the England side, defended better & England of course had to pick the obligatory shite rag & the obligatory media darling, neither of whom are part of the U21 team.

I have been wondering for ages why he was linked with so many clubs. I have asked that question on here a while ago. His moment in this game was the turning point, a Sunday league finisher.
