Women's World Cup

Women's World Cup

Postby Dameerto » Tue Jun 09, 2015 4:24 pm

On the off chance anyone else is interested, England's first group game kicks off at 6pm UK time this evening and is being shown on BBC2.
This will be the first world cup where the entire England squad is made up of professional players and four of the City women's team will start the match: keeper Bardsley, captain Houghton in central defence, Scott in midfield and surprisingly Bronze on the left of a five woman midfield. I assume there must be some threat from France's right wing that needs countering since she is more used to playing fullback/defence.
France are rated by FIFA as 3rd, England as 6th (though they could be as meaningless as the men's rankings).

Not playing too well in this game though slightly better second half. With 5 in midfield you would think we could retain some possession. I have watched the other games and enjoyed it so far.

Our fifth City Women representative is about to come on, Toni Duggan.

Far too comfortable for France, can't see Duggan getting any chances.

Was not a good advert for English women's football. Far to comfortable for France. Did England even have a shot apart from that woeful effort at the end when she should have carried the ball?

No we did nt really have any efforts on goal and failed to get any sort of foothold in the game. The French are good though so hopefully the next two games will be much better.

Third consecutive game I've seen England's women team now and I've been very disappointed each time.

Why Toni Duggan didn't start I don't know. I've watched a couple of the games now plus a few WSL games and the key to scoring goals and winning games is all about width and tempo, So of course England and slow and narrow.

Need to step it up in the final two games if they are to finish second in the group and avoid all the decent teams.

They looked more technically competent than the last tournament I watched. I think they were hoping for a draw against France, the so called difficult game is out of the way at least.

Eniola Aluko (sister of Hulls Sone Aluko) is flavour of the month, but she is faster and stronger than Duggan, I would only start with Duggan if she promised me some action.

I thought she was really fucking stupid, & England were just like England. That'll do for me, it is as annoying as the bloke's version.

That little French left back was wonderful in every way though.

Sweden looked awful against Nigeria the other night. Very disappointed. Nigeria on the other hand has a striker that looks head and shoulders, both physically and technically. Well impressed. Plays for Liverpool apparently. City sign her up!

"In my career so far it's the most important goal. You score the goal in the last minute to win the title. You're not sure if that's ever going to happen in your career again. I wish I could tell you how I did it but I can't. I thought for all the world that Mario was going to have a go himself but he just moved it on one more and it fell at my feet and I just thought: 'Hit the target, hit it as hard as you can and hit the target.' And it went in."

She's obviously a pal of Joe Hart then.
