In many games, the oppo just has to stop the two centre backs & the job is done. If Mangala, Demi or Vince don't score, & Dzeko isn't playing, who would you worry about as an opponent, even if David Beckham was taking the corners ? Yaya is big but hardly ever heads a ball in the box. Jovetic ? Aguero=dwarf.

With no Dzeko, Negredo, the opposition can just concentrate 100% on stopping two players. Then Silva scuffs the ball to the first man anyway.

Get Siva off corners, get Dzeko or Bony in the box, more chance of scoring.

Thiago's goal last night was great. No fucking about, lump the ball in, he outjumps the defenders & scores. That's how 90% of them were scored when Bell, Doyle, Booth, Watson, Royle, Kidd etc etc did it. Not by fancy curving ball trajectory. Get the cunt in there, away from the keeper, & head it.

Great goal. Tommy Booth style.

Still, we have had plenty of corners where we have been the bigger team, we are not a small team and we dont play against giants every week. Its piss poor corners first and foremost and lack of imagination too, that stat of no goals from the last 219 corners is ridiculous by anyones standards.

Another way of looking at that is that our attacking players are failing to beat the first defender to the ball.

How simple is this!!!

I wrote this ages ago

Wonderwall wrote:Can someone please explain to me why we dont have one of our players in front of whoever their first man is. It really is that simple IMO

ha ha, the mind boggles that coaches cannot get this right, put Aguero there FFS, it doesnt have to be the biggest of the team

Both PSG's goals were great headers. A thumper from Luis and a lovely header back across the goal by Silva. Kolarov's our best corner taker but doesn't play that often. We actually had a good record scoring from corners not so long ago.

Think I mentioned it earlier in the thread, we scored 13 from corners last season, the best in the league.

It's not just about being bigger. Few of our players can head a ball. They never could; it's not a new thing. They may be able to get their head 'to' a ball, but they have no skill whatsoever at directing it anywhere. Every now & then they connect & it looks great, but they miss stuff blokes in the conference would score. Even Dzeko would be about the 7th best header of a ball in Tony Book's team. Bony is genuinely good, but not a corner expert I believe.

Pellegrini created a miracle last season by somehow getting us to be better than anyone else at set pieces. But we had Negredo & Dzeko playing many games, sometimes Lescott. A lot more for the oppo to worry about.

We should get the best headrs of the ball, all together in the same area of the box, & whack the ball to where they are. Sometimes, it will hit one & go in or bounce off to Aguero. Guaranteed.

you dont have to be Jeff Astle or Alan Shearer to be good in the air, the first part is movement, the 2nd part is knowing about the delivery, which is something that "should" give us an advantage. If the delivery is good, you dont need to be a salmon to score, its directing the header on target. I am not accepting any excuses, if a Professional footballer cannot head a ball then they need sacking. It might not be their best attribute but I have seen Silva score a header, its not difficult, or at least it wants until this season.

Imo, there are hardly any really good headers of a football currently playing. No skill, no timing, just strength, size atheticism which enables them to get a head on the ball. Every now & then they get it right, but most of the time, the ball just bounces off their heads. Bony is pretty decent. Dzeko is just big.

Moyes' team was the best, & they just loaded the centre of the box. Works.

The excitement is starting to build. 7 months on, and after 300 odd corners, could this be the game where ......... we get one over the first man at the near post???!!!

I heard the east stand singing "Score a corner and we're on the pitch", now that would be funny.

Watching Rony Lopes recently & he had a great game game, plus scored, assisted & most importantly; toe ended a few corners to the first man & smacked a free kick 3 yards over everyone's heads.

Clearly he's a shoe in for the first team next season.

Terry and Carroll are two of the best in the Prem at the moment - they have an uncanny knack of getting exactly the right part of their head onto the ball to get it to do what they want. Garcia was pretty decent for us while we had him.

Yeah they are decent by today's standards, but still wouldn't have been great years ago. It's a bit of a dying art imo. Like proper defending.

Perfectly delivered corner, Sott Dann runs in unchallenged & guides it 2 yards wide, then one dipped over perfectly to the far post, runs in & heads it straight into the crowd.

The players I mentioned would score both. Utter shite at heading, these days.

i'd bet that it's close to 180 or so. Not a joke.

My 9 year old loves practicing corners. He'll go early and stay late to do it with a few of his mates.

Dunno what changes from a 9 year old's childish glee to better this part of the game vs. the kind of shit these turds are serving up, but it's honestly the most cynical shit ever. You'd think at least one of them would accidentally be hoofed somewhere that some cunt could tap in. Unbelievable stuff.

We're soft and slow and lazy. Maybe we do need that Argie cunt from Athleti. <smiley face>

cheers

It is quite frankly both amazing and appalling that we only have scored once from a corner all season. There are a few attributes I expect in a footballer.

Being able to run for 90 minutes.
Being competent enough to kick it with both feet.
Being able to pass it to a team mate nine times out of ten.
Being able to deliver a set piece into the danger zone regularly

It really isn't that difficult.
