ASDA on Alan Turing Way

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

ASDA on Alan Turing Way

Postby Goaters 103 » Thu Nov 20, 2014 12:13 pm

Anyone else heard the rumour that City have bought the land where the big Asda currently is, and are paying Asda to move elsewhere - rumoured to be Ancoats St where the old Toys r Us and Boots used to be?

Have heard this from a mate who works within the Council so have no reason to disbelieve it.

Interesting move if true and meaning City are acquiring more and more land in and around the stadium.

I heard this rumour a long time ago and thought it was untrue as they are still there. I was initially told it was going to be a hotel but it was all pub talk.

ASDA Harpurhey is nowhere near the ground. Harpurhey is in north Manchester.

I have a look at the Stadium thread on Bluemoon about once per week, & several people on there have been saying this for a long time. Now more are hearing the same thing.

Makes sense.

If you look at a satellite map of the area, there are absolutely loads of bits of land with a few small buildings & a couple of transit vans parked outside. If the powers that be are keen to redevelop that area, the possibilities are enormous. You could build a new City centre there, no problem at all.

Im interested as to what the plan is as its a hell of a lot of land. I suppose its watch this space time as far as City are concerned.

I too heard this a long time ago. depends who's actually buying it doesn't it? If the club then maybe a hotel/casino complex is the way to go. If Abu Dhabi then it could be another big housing agreement with MCC.

City denying it apparently.

Of course that doesn't rule out a related party buying it though. I was looking at the map & although Asda is right next to the Academy, there really are lots of other potentially much cheaper areas of land around Eastlands, with small, easy to relocate firms etc. Asda would surely cost a few quid to relocate. It would be cheaper just to move the athletics stadium for example, I would have thought.

Unless Asda want out.

No hurry either way, as Cameron is planning another recession by the sound of it.

City denied they were expanding the ground for the longest time so their denials may just be tactical.

For what it's worth, that asda is apparently the biggest money maker in the asda network, so if so I really don't see them leaving.

The ancoats retail redevelopment was earmarked to be anchored by a supermarket and all signs pointed to an asda, but I believe that ain't happening now as the developers have changed their mind on what they want there.

I have a feeling this is all a game of Chinese whispers.

Have we got McD's, Next and the car wash as well?

We've got a huge space right at the side of the stadium that's being used as an overflow car park, until we start the project on there then there's no need for us to buy the Asda site.
