Normally I agree with you on these types of issues but the whole auction thing is a bit tasteless. Not because of the team allegiance thing, but because the child has the right to a bit of integrity. Regardless of how that parent feels. I don't know, I can't really argue why but it just feels wrong.

It also assumes that the kid doesn't have a mind of his own. If that's true then clearly he should be a rag.

This is a big decision taken for the kid, grove up as a ragscum or one of gods own..

The winner will probably be entitled to his money back, because the child will have a mind of its own. He might accept the decision of the auction, but only if he wants to. Children are as unpredictable as cats.
