Defence of the Capital One Cup

Postby Hutch's Shoulder » Wed Aug 27, 2014 2:34 pm

Never mind the Champions' League rubbish, tonight its a draw for the League Cup (as I still call it).

The draw for Round 3 of the Capital One Cup will take place tonight live on Sky Sports immediately after the conclusion of the Bradford City versus Leeds United match.

Draw numbers

1. AFC Bournemouth
2. Arsenal
3. Bolton Wanderers
4. Brighton & Hove Albion
5. Cardiff City
6. Chelsea
7. Crystal Palace
8. Derby County
9. Doncaster Rovers
10. Everton
11. Fulham
12. Hull City
13. Liverpool
14. Manchester City
15. Middlesbrough
16. Milton Keynes Dons
17. Newcastle United
18. Norwich City
19. Nottingham Forest
20. Reading
21. Sheffield United
22. Sheffield Wednesday
23. Shrewsbury Town
24. Southampton
25. Swansea City
26. Tottenham Hotspur
27. West Bromwich Albion
28. Aston Villa / Leyton Orient
29. Birmingham City / Sunderland
30. Bradford City / Leeds United
31. Burton Albion / Queens Park Rangers
32. Stoke City / Portsmouth

Number 33 retired in memory of the rag's defeat to MK Dons.

All Round 3 ties are to be played during the week commencing 22nd September 2014.

Can we retain our Cup? YES. Who do we want in the draw? Well, for me a nice away trip to Burton would be good as I have never been to that ground.

Bolton away for me, get them in the early rounds whilst we are still not too tired for a tough local derby... :o)

retain it my arse. the league and CL are priority one and only, cups are for the B team, don't want to see any senior players playing in any of it.
The league will be harder to win this time around, no time for flaffing about with this stuff anymore. the longer we mess about with these cups the more likelihood of us screwing up the league.

A trophy is a trophy. A trip to wembley is great fun. Three games to a semifinal. You can almost get there by accident. Play to win.

Why do we need such a high quality squad, if we're not going to compete on all fronts ??

We certainly don't have to choose between competitions at this early stage, with lots of potential first teamers badly needing some game time - Willy, Mangler, Sagna, Lampard, Milner, Navas, Dedryk, Nastasic/Sinclair/Richards (if they are still here) will all be looking forward to getting some competitive action.

At home v Donny or Shrewsbury would be decent. Can afford to completely rest any senior player and still progress. Agree with both sentiments in that its not a cup we should primarily target, as we have bigger fish to fry. However, like piccs(?) said, only 3 games from semi and a pot is a pot and nobody can turn up their noses at a trip to Wembley.

Therefore a game at home to lower league opposition is a win win
