I'm pretty sure Bishop rejoined after we got promoted back to Division One, as it was. Not that that detracts from your point.

EDIT: Just checked and I'm wrong. Odd, as I'm normally bang-on with dates.

I don't know what made you think that Bish rejoined, but I would have sworn you were right. Time does funny things to the memory.

It's weird that I still can't picture Bish playing for us in Div 2 or in any of those Kappa shirts. I always think of Brown, Whitley and Pollock as our three regular CMs during that season.

EDIT: And Horlock, of course.

My enduring memory of Bishop's second spell is that goal he scored against Leeds in the cup at Maine Road.

How the deuce did we win the League with him in the No 5 shirt ???....but what a player !!

No way was Heslop a crude player. A toughnut yes , but not crude.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this.

I really liked him but even in those far off days I appreciated that, as well as being a bit erratic, he certainly wasn't your archetypal cultured, ball playing defender.

Dare I say it...Don Revie ??!! even though in those days he was described as a player without a position.

Bishop started that play off final I think. He played a few as well. Cooke was also in midfield. He and Morrison turned our season. We were mid table obscurity when they turned up. Shame Cooke got treated so badly. His appearances clause was about to kick in meaning we had to pay United more money. We had no money so he never played for us again.

Just to enter the debate, for the time George Heslop was a very good footballer as centre backs went. What he lacked was pace and turning ability but he could play out from the back better than most.We got him from Everton reserves where Brian Labone was first choice I think.Served us well til Tommy Booth was ready.Yeh we conceded a lot of goals but that was more to do with the gung ho systems of the time. All, imo

I think get dressed has addressed this point about culture better than i wish to expound.

Clive Allen. At the time we'd just been promoted back to the top flight and I couldn't believe we'd signed a striker of his quality. I remember him scoring a belter at Stamford Bridge and scoring v Port vale while still tying his shorts. He was a match winner but never got a look in after Reidy took over. He wasn't a fan of his work rate.

I think Jordan came up against Ronaldo a few times and had him in his pocket every time. Very strange considering their career trajectory
