Favourite forgotten players

Postby Evenmydoghatesunited » Tue Apr 08, 2014 5:26 pm

Was thinking...

Even those who are ten years old or those who have only just decided to follow (as opposed to supporting which is paying to see) have players they know well from that which they have read about. Few will disagree with the usual names past or present.

However there are some whom those of us will remember who played their arse off for this club and who deserve recognition not for their talent or achievements (ha). But effort is worth its reward, so who would you pick from obscurity and ask that we never forget their contribution?

I really liked Huckerby, dunno why.

But my favorite forgotten player has to be Laurent Robert, even if he didn't play for City. Loved his incredible skill, he could had been bigger.

From the eighties, Gordon Smith and Clive Wilson - they both worked well together on the left side of the pitch (I've always liked 'left-footers', being so myself).

Another 'left footer', this time from the sixties, Dave Wagstaffe - a wonderfully tricky winger.

The 'barnstorming' young centre-forward Ian Bowyer......and then Brian Clough got hold of him and converted him to a midfielder.

Another left-winger from the sixties was Tony Coleman - about as subtle as a steam train.

Then the best of them all in my eyes, although not really forgotten in the "Lee, Bell and Summerbee" era, just a little overlooked by comparison, was the left footed, imperious maestro Neil Young.

Laurent Chavet....he got a bit of stick but I thought he was a good player. SWP is top of the list though and Mick Channon.

Gerard Wiekens. Good guy, never let us down and was a consummate professional in three different divisions - one of which was below his ability level and one of which was a bit above it.

Decent thread.

+1. Add Andy Morrison to that. Hard as nails. Limited ability but used what he had to great effect

Anyone from the side that got us out of League 1. Morrison, Wiekens, Cooke, Weaver, Bishop etc etc. And not forgetting Big Joe and David Bernstein. Without them all we can only speculate....

I'm pretty sure Bishop rejoined after we got promoted back to Division One, as it was. Not that that detracts from your point.

EDIT: Just checked and I'm wrong. Odd, as I'm normally bang-on with dates.

I remember he scored a wonder goal against Leicester, only for it to be disallowed for a foul.

My favourites were Ali Bernabia and Georgi Kinkladze, two completely outstanding talents among many over the years.
My young childhood heroes were Lee, Bell and Summerbee but of course they will never be forgotten.
