I liked it, it worked better than whatever that was that I just witnessed.

They are showing it now & Lescott is touch tight marking some blonde fucker, Garcia is marking someone else: WHY THE FUCK WAS ZABBA GIVEN THE JOB OF MARKING THEIR CENTRE FORWARD ?
He was utter shite, but he's a fullback.
(This is the job some people think Rekik will do next season! Hahahaha. Yeah, right.)

Agreed. There's lot of players who I wouldn't trust to defend properly a defensive corner: any striker, any of the miggets, Yaya, Micah... Plus the ones who I do trust also make mistakes so I'm very worried for the whole season.

Zonal marking is a load of bollocks. Overcomplicating something which doesn't even need complicating. Get your man and stick with him.

That's fine provided he doesn't jump a foot higher & bury the ball in the back of the net.

Exactly!
3 seasons with the best defensive record in the league suggests that Zonal works.

What does zonal marking do? Mark the spaces rather than the man? Kompany wouldn't have let Campbell have two free headers.
Sometimes the opposition will score from set pieces, it happens no matter what system you have. But I really don't see the merits in overcomplicating it.

It would be irrelevant if the goalkeeper came and caught the ball and not give the centre-forward free headers a yard or two from goal. If the ball is that close to the goal, it is not unreasonable for defenders to expect the goalkeeper to claim it.

Aha, a thought that also occurred to me. I think the system today is called the "standing still" system. Can't see it catching on.

Honestly, we look much worse off now. Benefit of the doubt as its early though.

Kompany wouldn't have been in that zone, well definitely not for the 2nd & probably not for the first.
Micah Richards would have won both headers had he been marking him. In the end, you have to do your job, whatever the system.
Surely the oppo centre forward should be man marked by one of our centre halves anyway, not a fullback.

Zabba may still have ended up marking Campbell and still forgetting to try and head the ball even in zonal marking.
A well worked zonal system takes practice but can have some good results as we've seen, but we also saw some poor results when a clever attacker can choose his defender as opposed to the better defenders choosing their own marks.
Today we had brain dead defenders on the wrong marks.

It's very different to use zonal marking instead of man to man and today suggested Zaba isn't very good at it.Not forgetting that Joe was mainly at fault with the first corner as he seemed to think he was sup[posed to mark the guy who stood on him initially.
I just hope our defenders suss it out very quickly.

As I recall it took us a while to get to grips with Zonal, it maybe that it will take as long to unlearn it ...

Don't they tend to mark someone of equal height? Lescott was probably marking some big centre back or something? Campbell and Zabaleta are similar heights so i can kinda see the logic in that. Campbell isn't exactly known for his aerial prowess. Same way you wouldn't expect a big 6'3 centre back to mark someone like Aguero at a corner. They'd probably mark Lescott or Kompany.
Still, poor job admittedly but i can at least see the logic.

Yeah, further to my above post. Just did a bit of looking into it. Lescott was marking their number 2, Connolly who's 6'2. Campbell is 5'8....

Whoever you mark it's about how to deal with movement and strength.Sadly today Zaba didn't handle the movement at all well.

Yeah of course and I agree. I was just replying to Ted's point asking why Zab was marking a centre forward.
