Very exciting - maybe our youngsters would develop better in a league with more time on the ball and technical ability, but it wouldn't prepare them for stepping up to the first team that's for sure.

The commercial potential though I would imagine is huge. A new club in one of the biggest cities in the world would be an opportunity to pick up fans new to the game, and bring big names to the USA on short term deals maybe for those who have fallen out of favour or returning from injury

Looks like a win win situation for city

300 MILLION.

I guess Mansour is still spending that 1billion profit off his Barclays deal.

I'm not sure what to make of this. It's been doing the rounds for over a year now and last time it came out the club denied all knowledge of the franchise. Is it bullshit again?

It'd be an interesting development though, if they are going ahead with it. I also wonder what the scope would be to become partners with regard to player transfers etc. Maybe the powers that be have forced us into this situation with the implementation of FFP?

Partly i'd say yes, partly no. There is a large chunk of this move that strikes me as an effort by Abu Dhabi to capture the holy grail that is the american market, rather than just to help out City, even though it clearly will.

Either way there are a number of benefits to this for city.

Firstly, New York city FC likely will pay our club to aid them in the creation of theirs. A large and legitimate income, easily justified.

Secondly, the badge, potentially the new FC could adopt a badge similar to ours and pay a royalty. Again a very viable (and FFP busting) option.

Thirdly, the new york club could pay for a deal to have exclusive access to our young talent developed by our world class academy, with say.. one or two going to America, each season. Again another revenue stream to us, and wholly justifiable in the eyes of FFP.

And finally, we could sell our older players to the American FC for fees akin to what we payed originally. Less easy to justify via FFP but if the americans view it as "marquee" we could pull it off.

All in all, if city has a direct link to an American FC, which fails outside of FFP (which it will) it can only be a good thing for us.

Seems to have gathered steam and links nicely with the game we're about to play there.

My only concern - as a marketing exercise, does that take more of the owner's interest? Easy to say at the moment that we'd be the big club helping them, but for how long?

That said, may be a way to get future RSCs etc off the books - offer them a move to New York

They say the new club will not play till 2016 and the club itself will feature a 35000 seater capacity stadium, so I don't think they are thinking about making the new team a world beater in its own right, or even bigger than us, hell it could (should) take a lifetime to reach our status, I'm of the mind it is just another part of the overall abu dhabi sporting package, a method of breaking the american market.

A new club will likely compliment us rather than detract from us. Besides as others have said, to most rich owners, these sort of projects would consume a large chunk of a persons wealth, however to our sheikh it is just a drop in the pond. I doubt this will negatively affect us one jot.

I certainly hope it won't, but to cross reference another thread, you're not a City fan if... you don't expect the worst.

Haha, quite true.

City never do things the easy way. Ever.

more time on the ball and technical ability? This is MLS, not La Liga. What are you watching? The league has improved for sure and i'm encouraged by that as an American, but from a developmental perspective i'd rather have a player in the Championship with a team that focused on playing the ball on the floor than in MLS. Maybe define "youngsters" as a start....i wouldn't want Razak, Suarez, etc....anywhere near MLS.

Looks like it is! Be good to have a team to watch live over here!

Speaking of NY, are any of you lads coming over in May for the game?

Is this because you don't rate them, as youngsters doomy?

I do agree though in terms of preping our top up and comers for the big time, even a stint in the Championship would give them more of what they need to succeed. However the MLS could prove useful in boosting the confidence (and dare I say it, profile) of our lesser talents with perhaps a view to sell.

A good example would be Harry Bunn, Imagine Harry Bunn, a success at youth and reserve level, heading to the MLS, scoring for fun and returning back with a nice value associated with him based his great MLS success.

I reasonable money making plan no?

I disagree entirely.

We need to get our players out of the kick and rush mentality and give them competitive exposure in a place which mirrors the way the first team play. EDS is not the place for that, nor is the championship.

In the US the quality might not be that high, but the facilities are generally top notch, decent pitches and not quite so much of the physical kick and rush stuff you get in the championship.

Assuming the sheikh wants to win in mls, one would imagine there would be some good quality oldies in the side to mentor the younger ones too.

Maybe I have it completely wrong, just a thought

Who will own the new club - Mansour or City? Not sure what the rules are regarding revenue vs pay in MLS, but if there's no equivalent of FFP, they could be a wholly owned subsidiary of City (and therefore still an asset for Mansour).

The cost of creating the club wouldn't impact on FFP, but any revenue would come in the same way as from a burger van. Even without buying players off MCFC, we could get their TV income, shirt sales etc.

So any of you who drive on the wrong side of the road know what the rules are regarding income and expenditure in the MLS?
