I know it's unfair to say so but I can't get interested in this competition and I fail completely to take it seriously.

It just seems a case of too much too often.

I've never, ever watched any of the games in this competition because, to put it harshly, I've always regarded it as a third rate competition.

How unfair am I being by regarding it in those terms and how good is it as a tournament or, more importantly, how high is the quality of the games that are played ??

its a difficult one, some of the games are so poor they frustrate you. Especially as we are used to watching the premier league and that is a massively different level to this, however, from my experience (I will watch anything), the players are allowed to express themselves, you see some exciting free flowing football, silky skills and some good football too, instead of a rigid game of chess cancelling each other out.....plus the keepers are completely mental and often seen dribbling at the halfway line :-)

We knew this tournament was coming from months back so we have no-one to blame but ourselves. Toure's absence for a crucial set of fixtures is a huge problem, especially the Chelsea game which we must not lose.

Thanks for that WW.

I think that rather than just ignoring it as a tournament, I'll have to make time to watch some of the games, even though it might be a bit of a footballing culture shock in the first instance.

I particularly like the idea of goalkeepers dribbling on the half-way line; it might to help to appreciate our own players a little more (aren't goalkeepers, by the very definition of that term, supposed to be "mental" to want to play in that position anyway ??).

PS I'll make no comment about the purported rigidity of chess (even though I just have).

ha ha, give it a go, you might be surprised, one way or the other. Chess is brilliant but not something I would watch on Television! Imagine Afcon with Bobby Fischer, Garry Kasparov and Magnus Carlsen as managers!

The reason it seems to come up so often is they switched years, so rather than have 3 years without one, we ended up having one on consecutive years. I hope CIV are paying his wages while he's gone, let's see how quickly they send him back if we did that.

even though it is supposed to be every 4 years, it feels like it is every year because they changed the date.

i think what happened is that they took the original date and then changed it so that the tournament happened every other year, but then they had a couple in a row, and then maybe like 3 in four years as a result.

Maybe. I dunno. Possibly.

anyway, about that missing plane...

Wow, a point I already made and all you did was make it wrong.

It's always run every two years. They changed it so it didn't run on a year coinciding with the Euros or WC(like people weren't going because of that). So yes, in changing it we've had a couple in a row, the point I already made.
